Remind me next time

It was no surprise to see the betting and home favourite Jon Rahm shoot -9 in the final round to reach a total of -25 and win by 6 over France’s Mathieu Pavon to climb back up the World Rankings into number 5.

It was a week where the preview was in real good profit. Eduardo Molinari finished T4 at 66/1 and Louis de Jager finished T6 also at 66/1, which bought the preview two full places and gave punters a really good return for the week. We are still hunting that 5th win of the year however, so we will go again this week in Europe.

Andalucía Masters Betting Odds

Players travel to the south of the Country to the area of Sotogrande for the 2nd out of 3 installments in this Spanish stretch on the DP World Tour, to compete for the Andalucía Masters. Another stand out event for me on the DP World Tour calendar and will be a great place to bring my run of previews to an end for a couple of weeks on Golf in Europe as I move to previewing the PGA Tour for a while. Valderrama is up there with the biggest of tests for players year in year out and it looks to be a cracker once again this week.

Club de Golf Valderrama

  • Par 71, 7030 yards approx.
  • Designer – Trent Jones Snr. – Kyle Phillips redesigns in 2015/16
  • Fairways/Rough – Bermuda
  • Greens – Bentgrass
  • 4 x Par 3s – ranging from 173-225 yards
  • 11 x Par 4s – ranging from 351-490 yards
  • 3 x Par 5s – 536, 557 and 582 yards
  • Tree lined, undulating fairways
  • Heavily bunkered, tiny greens

A short course on paper but oh boy this is a stern test for the players and will require all elements of their game to be in ship shape if they want to be in contention come Sunday afternoon.

Narrow fairways that are treelined with thick oak trees, undulating fairways which when dry seem almost impossible to hit in regulation at times, thick Bermuda rough is lurking for those who are really wayward off the tee which can provide penal lies that restrict players from reaching these tiny greens in regulation.

When the players reach these greens, the danger isn’t over. Tight lies and severe run offs surround these greens that are heavily protected with large and deep bunkers.

A test of all tests as you can see.

Stats to consider this week

SG:OTT / Driving Accuracy
There are plenty of short holes here at Valderrama. The fairways are narrow and need to be found in the right places. A strong tee shot will maximise the guys’ chances to score low on the scoreable holes.

A very low position of 4th place in the field. This is the average of where the last three winners of this event finished at the end of the Andalucía Masters, with not one anomaly out the three it is clear that a good Tee 2 Green game is needed around this course, and it may be worth looking to see which players have performed well T2G the last few weeks on Tour, this will give a good indication of the guys coming here with high confidence in their game.

Players will find themselves out of position this week on numerous occasions, maybe not from bad shots, just from bad bounces, fliers from the Bermuda rough or from the runoffs around these greens. Players are going to have to grind there way through their 4 rounds, not letting their concentration lapse one bit as it could result into a big score on their scorecards.

Part of this scrambling will be reliant on the players having a better than average week with the flat stick. A glance over putting performances here from the past 3 leaderboards will surely not going a miss this week.

Par 4 performance
9 out of the 11 Par 4s that the players will face this week in Spain are all under 450 yards… yes, under 450!

Very short and gettable holes for all players. But not all players like short holes and like Par 4s, so a look over the stats for this year on the best performers on Par 4s as a whole will be important this week.
