The Presidents Cup starts tomorrow and although it’s not as thrilling as the Ryder Cup for us Europeans, it’s definitely going to be a great weekend of Golf. In this article Stuart Gatelan will be picking out his best tips for the tournament.

Presidents Cup Tips

The Presidents Cup is a series of men's golf matches between a team representing the United States and an International Team representing the rest of the world minus Europe (i.e. Asia, Africa, Central and South America, Oceania, Mexico and Canada).

The tournament has been held biennially since 1994. In that time the International team have only managed one victory with the United States winning nine times and the tournament ending in a tie just the once. This year will prove just as difficult for the International team as the Americans come into the tournament with possibly the strongest line-up they’ve ever had.

Day 4 Singles Winner Tip

As mentioned above the USA team look very strong this year with the likes of Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, who all sit in the Top 4 of the overall rankings. They also have Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar in the team who will provide a wealth of experience and a cool head when needed.

The International team can’t be taken for granted with the likes of Jason Day, Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott but on paper the Americans should prove too good in the singles and I for one think they will cruise to a comfortable success on Day 4.

Top USA Player Tip

Most people will be backing Dustin Johnson or Jordan Spieth to be the Top USA Player but I have a strong feeling Patrick Reed will be the stand out player for the Americans.

There seems to be nothing Reed loves more than a team event and he’s proven to be a very solid addition to the American side, as proven by his performances in the 2014 and 2016 Ryder Cup.  He comes into this tournament on the back of a 13th place finish at the TOUR Championship but I fully expect him to be fired up for this and once again prove very tough to beat.

Top International Player Tip

Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama are favourites to win the most points for the International team but at the prices I think Marc Leishman is a great bet.

Leishman is having the best year of his career with two wins at the BMW Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational and seven top 10 finishes in total. He comes into this tournament at the top of his game and I think he could be the shining light for the International team.

Top Debutant Player Tip

When it comes to this year’s debutants all eyes will be on PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and US Open champion Brooks Koepka.

Brooks has had a solid year with his first major win and seven top 10 finishes but I can’t see past Justin Thomas in this market. With five wins and twelve top 10 finishes it’s safe to say Thomas has been one of, if not the player of the year. I fully expect that form to continue this week and I think backing him to be the Top Debutant is the best bet of the tournament.
