An 18/1 place last week from Burns means we have now had 4 places in 5 weeks, a really close week again with Burns being T3, Finau T7 and Rose being T9. But with just the 4/5 places being paid at all bookies, we had to settle for the one place. Burns held the sole lead at one stage, however with a triple bogey on the 14th, this dented his win hopes.

Hovland who I spoke about highly last week was the overall winner, who played some unreal stuff when others faltered in what was a strange round of golf from most with double bogeys aplenty.

QBE Shootout Preview

We move onto the last event of 2021, the QBE Shootout held at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida. A course which has held the QBE Shootout since 2001.

An event that is held over three days, with a variety of formats across each round.

Friday’s round will be a classic Scramble format. Each player will tee off, then will decide which tee shot was best and then both take their second shots from that position. Then will continue like that with upcoming shots, even on the greens.

Saturday’s round will be the Alternate Shot (Foursomes) format however both players on the team will tee off and then go from the best drive in an alternate order.

Then finally, Sunday’s round will be the typical Fourball style (Better Ball), where each player plays their own ball and the best scores is taken at the end of each hole.

QBE Shootout Past Winners

There is obviously 19 years of course form that I could mention here, but I will just name the last five winning pairs;

2020 – Harris English/Matt Kuchar -37! (Course Record…. Yes -37 that’s right)
2019 – Rory Sabbatini/Kevin Tway -31
2018 – Patton Kizzire/Brian Harman -30
2017 – Steve Stricker/Sean O’Hair -26
2016 – Harris English/Matt Kuchar -28

A few previous winners tee it up this week in Naples, English/Kuchar have won here three times as a pair and had a few top finishes to go with them. Sean O’Hair has won here twice with Steve Stricker, however Steve has unfortunately pulled out of this week and has been replaced by Will Zalatoris.

Other than this, Brian Harman, Brandt Snedeker, Jason Day and Ian Poulter have all won at this event but with different partners.

About Tiburon GC – Gold Course

  • Par 72
  • 7,382 Yards
  • Greg Norman design
  • Bermuda Greens
  • No rough in play at all, fairways lined with waste areas instead
  • 4 Par 3s
  • 10 Par 4s
  • 4 Par 5s
  • Birdie fest.

A fairly long but gettable course in the nice Florida weather that yields tons of birdies each year.

No stats to go off again this week as we enter an unofficial PGA Tour event, and no FedEx cup points will be scored here because of that. Looking from past winners here and their style of play, it favours teams with strong iron play between the pair and at least have one strong putter in the team.

QBE Shootout Betting Odds

Opening at the top of the market at 4/1 we have the very strong pairing of Sam Burns/Billy Horschel. it's no surprise to see these at the top with Burns being the highest ranked player in the field both in the rankings and in the FedEx Cup.

Five starts this season to date with 1-T14-T5-T7-T3 shows he is in sublime form and without him taking seven shots to navigate the Par 4 14th hole last week he would have pushed Hovland the whole way. Horschel is also coming off a good end to his 2021 season where he had a win at the BMW Champs at Wentworth and got all the way to the Tour Champs on the PGA Tour. Both are monsters from T2G who can catch fire with the putter, will be no surprise to see them go in this week.

Second favourites in the market are my main bet of this week so I will go into them a little bit further down. Upto the 10/1 range we have defending champions and three time winners of the Shootout English/Kuchar, Homa/Kisner and Day/Leishman.

Pick of this bunch has to be the defending champions for me, coming to a place they clearly love, English showed signs over the weekend at the Hero Challenge of some good form and Kuchar has found his consistency this year that illuded him last year with 4/4 cuts made so far this season with finishes of T36-T35-T22-T37.

The pairs games clearly work well with each other. English is very good off the tee and with his irons and Kuchar from 150 yards in and on the greens is a force to be reckoned with when he gets going, I can see them challenging again.

Other than my second and final pair I am betting this week, the best of the rest before Westwood decided to withdraw was the pairing of Westwood/Poulter at 12/1. With Poulter being a former winner here and showing some nice form recently, with Lee’s consistent Tee 2 Green game, I thought they would have worked nicely here this week. But, since starting this preview Lee has withdrawn and has been replaced with the hot and cold Charles Howell III, so I feel now consistency within the pairing may be the issue.

QBE Shootout Predictions

Just the two tips from me this week as it’s a 12 pairing field.

Jason Kokrak/Kevin Na – Tipped at 6/1

Both pairings I have tipped this week have not played together in this tournament before, however I love the contrasting styles they bring to the table.

Kokrak is coming off a win last time out at the Houston Open, where he putted the lights out of it all weekend (especially Sunday) and was a brute Off the Tee, clearly back to his form he shown last season.

Kevin Na has only had 2 starts this year and has had trouble with a bruised rib recently, however from interviews and videos from the past few days, I am confident he feeling good going into the Shootout. Na’s game is very meticulous; very straight off the tee, consistent ball striker with his irons and around and on the greens, he is a wizard. There is not much that can go wrong with his swing/game so I am hoping that if he is fully fit then he will give a good performance for his partner Kokrak.

Kokrak will bring the power this week and Na will bring the measured accurate approach and the touch needed around the greens.

Both players have also had a second here within the last 2 years with different partners, but clearly have a good eye for the place, with Na also having a T3 here in 2018 also.

Corey Conners/Graeme McDowell – Tipped at 12/1

That brings me too my final tip of 2021, like the pairing above that I have tipped, I am not really focusing on the previous performance stats this week but focusing on previous performances at Tiburon GC and the dynamic of the pairing itself.

Just like Kokrak/Na, these two have not played with each other here however they both have high finishes here. Conners on his sole start has a T6 back in 2019 here and Graeme has a 5-2-T2 in his last 3 starts here.

Their games also I am sure will marry up perfectly, Conners is dominant from Tee 2 Green and has been high in all the stats for a good year now on tour and Graeme will bring the sharp Around the Green game and a hot putter on surfaces he enjoys playing on. If Conners can find a week where he putts well, these will contend.
