The South African Open has unfortunately lost DP World Tour status following the discovery of the Omicron Covid-19 variant in the country but a solid field made up primarily of local players will head to Sun City to contest what is now a Sunshine Tour-only event.

The SA Open, which is staged at Gary Player Country Club for the second consecutive year, features a host of home hopefuls, including defending champion Christiaan Bezuidenhout.

South African Open Betting Odds

World number 48 Bezuidenhout claimed his national Open by five shots last year and it's no surprise to see him topping the market at 6/1 for a tournament which, in the absence of almost all of the European contingent, is weaker than usual.

However, Bezuidenhout is far from the only recognisable South African in the field with Dean Burmester a 10/1 shot. Garrick Higgo is 11/1 and Dylan Frittelli is 12/1.

South African Open Prediction

Wilco Nienaber to Win - BET NOW

The odds suggest that this title will go the way of a South African with Gary Player Country Club, an ultra-long course where bigger hitters have tended to hold sway, likely to play into the hands of Wilco Nienaber.

Few players can match Nienaber with driver in hand and, of all the high-class South Africans in the field, the 21-year-old powerhouse could well be the man to back at 18/1.

Nienaber drove the ball well in Joburg last week and his results in Europe have been solid - he was sixth at the Spanish Open and eighth at the Challenge Tour Grand Final, while his most recent Sun City outing saw him finish 11th at the end of last year, where a cold putter held him back.

JC Ritchie to Win - BET NOW

Eight-time Sunshine Tour winner JC Ritchie is another to have played well in both Europe and his homeland in recent weeks, finishing sixth in the Challenge Tour final and then in a share of eight in Joburg last week, and he looks in with a chance.

His SA Open record is excellent - he finished third at Glendower in January 2018, sixth at Randpark in January 2020 and fifth when the event was played at Gary Player CC for the first time in December 2020. Expect him to go well at 35/1.

South African Open Long Shot

Hennie du Plessis to Win - BET NOW

At more generous odds of 40/1, another South African, Hennie du Plessis, looks worth a bet as he bids to capitalise on a solid run of results which should have him full of confidence.

Du Plessis, sixth at Randpark in January 2020 and sixth again at Gary Player last December, has form figures of 4-20-15-39-5-18 on Europe's Challenge Tour and was most recently seventh in Joburg.
