The closing afternoon of the Boodles May Festival can mean only one thing - the tote+ Chester Cup Handicap is centre stage on the Roodee.

A field of 17 are scheduled to line-up for the two-and-a-quarter-mile Chester showpiece and it looks to be fiercely competitive. We've got a big-race selection amongst our best bets for Friday's card at Chester.

Armory to win - BET NOW

A Royal Ascot winner in 2019, Sangarius hasn't been seen much recently but he beat a pair of these rivals - Bangkok and Palavecino - to win a Listed all-weather race at Lingfield in December when last spotted. He's got claims for Sir Michael Stoute here, while the likeable Bangkok represents a stable in excellent form and is also a factor following his Easter Classic win last month.

Armory can thwart them both, however, for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore. The Galileo colt bagged a Group 3 in Ireland over this trip last summer and ran third subsequently in the Irish Champion Stakes behind outstanding stablemate Magical and the outstanding Ghaiyyath. He ended 2020 with a fine second to Sir Dragonet in the Cox Plate down in Australia.

He ran a big race in fourth in the Irish 2000 Guineas last season on his comeback despite meeting trouble and so can be expected to fire first time out and, dropped in class, can land this Group 2 Huxley Stakes - a race his rider Moore has already won a record five times.

Glencadam Glory to win and each-way - BET NOW

Last summer's Ebor second at York, Glencadam Glory, is worth chancing at a decent price in the Chester Cup. He's got form over further from his days with John Gosden - running well for a long way in the 2m5½f Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2018 and, after missing two years, he showed good form last summer in four runs prior to his Ebor second.

He made plenty of the running that day at York and was only just touched off by Fujaira Prince. His next run at Haydock came quickly enough, while his final two efforts at Newbury and Doncaster were over a trip shorter than his optimum.

He had a pipe opener last month at Musselburgh back over 1m6f and while that form gives him something to work on with a few of these rivals, he should be plenty sharper for it. He's now rated 4lb below his Ebor mark and looks an each-way contender for Jason Hart - who was amongst the winners here on Thursday.

Lawn Ranger to win and each-way - BET NOW

Restorer ended last season with a gutsy win over C&D and will be popular for an in-form Ian Williams team. However, he only just held off Lawn Ranger that day and Michael Attwater's charge has sound enough claims now being 4lb better off as they meet again.

The Cityscape gelding had shown a liking for this circuit in August when winning on his first visit and he was only short-headed by Restorer the following month. They are drawn side-by-side in the middle here and should be able to get into contention with low numbers Trais Flours and Lunar Jet having some questions over them.

Restorer does go well fresh but Lawn Ranger had a spin around Kempton in late March and should be ready for this. He's a much bigger price and his previous two runs on the Roodee demand respect.
