The final leg of the triple crown takes place at Belmont on Saturday and we have two selections for the big race.

Belmont Stakes 23.27

Justify to Win and Each Way @ 4/5 - BET NOW

Bob Baffert is nothing short of a master at training horses on dirt and Justify would appear to have strong claims of maintaining his unbeaten record here.

A winner of each of his five starts, the colt has proven himself already on both sloppy and fast surfaces, winning his first three starts at Santa Anita. The win in the Kentucky Derby was an impressive success on his fourth run before gaining the second leg of the triple crown at Churchill Downs last time.

Despite the winning margin of just a half-length, there was plenty to like about his latest effort and the way he won suggested he had a bit in hand. The jockey’s decision to ease him down in the final furlong made it look closer than it was in reality, and Mike Smith may have preserved him with this race in mind.

A win here would be his trainer’s second triple crown success after the remarkable American Pharoah in 2015, the first horse to achieve the feat since 1978. Since then, the trainer has also had the privilege of training Dubai World Cup/Pegasus/Breeders’ Cup Classic Winner Arrogate.

Justify looks like an equally exciting horse capable of giving the Arizonan a second triple crown success in the space of just four renewals.

Gronkowski to Win and Each Way @ 40/1 - BET NOW

At a much bigger price, Gronkowski looks like a fascinating contender on debut for his new connections. With the owners removing all their horses from Jeremy Noseda’s stable in recent weeks, Chad Brown is the lucky beneficiary of what was a strong hope for the Kentucky Derby at one stage.

The three-year-old was unfortunately injured in the weeks before his target but he’s done very little wrong in his four starts on artificial surfaces in the UK, and that culminated with an impressive win in Listed class at Newcastle when last seen. The form of that race has been franked since and this son of Lonhro is bred to go on this surface on his first try on dirt.

He shaped like he would certainly appreciate the step up in trip when winning over the straight mile at Newcastle and his new trainer has reported the colt has turned up in peak fitness for his tilt at the big one.

It might be a stretch to think he can get the better of Justify but he has place claims, with stamina doubts over many of his rivals, and provided he fares okay with the draw, he looks like good each-way value in a race that’s wide open bar the favourite in the contest.
