West Approach to Win and Each-way @ 16/1 - BET NOW

Colin Tizzard may be yet to win his first Betvictor Gold Cup, but he is set to saddle a fascinating contender in this Saturday’s renewal with West Approach.

The half-brother to Thistlecrack was an excellent third here at the Showcase Meeting last month. Jumping boldly from the front, the eight-year-old had his rivals in some trouble with half a mile left before he faded back in to third, shaping like he was in need of the run.

The son of Westerner has long given the impression that this drop back in trip would suit and provided he settles a little better in the closing stages this time around, he could be a hard horse to peg back.

The forecast good ground looks in his favour - all his best hurdles form came on a quicker surface than what he got throughout most of last season - and the yard could hardly be in much better form at present with seven winners from their last 29 runners, a strike-rate of nearly 25%.

Widely available to back at 16/1 with most bookmakers paying four places, he ought to outrun those odds and it would be a surprise if bookmakers let him go off at that sort of starting price.

Don't write off a Twiston-Davis horse

Ballyandy to Win and Each-way @ 16/1 - BET NOW

There’s no shortage of dangers in opposition and when looking for potential winners of this race, anything that Nigel Twiston-Davies sends has to be worthy of respect given that he’s won three of the last 10 renewals of the race, most recently with Splash Of Ginge last year.

The Welsh trainer has three still entered at this stage including last year’s winner but Ballyandy could be the main threat to the selection given that he shaped like he was in need of the run on his Wetherby return last month.

A winner of the Champion Bumper here as a five-year-old, Ballyandy’s career hasn’t quite taken off over fences yet but he gives the impression he’s slowly getting the hang of things and his run at Wetherby, while a little disappointing, wasn’t devoid of encouragement.

Any rain would likely be a positive to his chances and he often proves popular with punters, so expect his price to shorten.

Crievehill is the other runner for Nigel Twiston-Davies and he would appear to be another in need of some cut in the ground.

The son of Arcadio returned with a fair effort at Uttoxeter last time out when third of 13 in a competitive contest and while he’s up 7lb for that effort, he remains capable of better this season.
