Cheltenham 2019 Day 1 Outsider Betting Tips

Tizzard takes aim at Supreme Novices' Hurdle

Outsider Betting Tips for Cheltenham 2019

It's the Cheltenham Festival and alongside our daily acca bets we'll be hoping to find some selections capable of running big races at bigger prices with our Outside Cheltenham Tips coming up on all four days of the meeting. Hopefully we can uncover some each-way players and maybe a big-priced winner or two.

Supreme Novices' Hurdle Betting Tips

(Tues, 13:30)

Elixir De Nutz to win and each-way @ 10/1 - BET NOW

The opening race might go the way of Colin Tizzard, despite a worrying lull for the Dorset trainer leading into this biggest week of the year.

His charge has won his last three starts, including over the C&D at Cheltenham in December when he made all the running and did it quite nicely up the hill.

Next time out he won the Grade 1 Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown, again making most of the running and holding off the challenge of Grand Sancy to win by a half-length.

It is a positive that he has won on varying ground so far this season and also to be admired is the manner in which he appears to relish seeing his races out once the challengers arrive on his girths.

It often pays to be up on the pace in the Supreme, given the helter-skelter nature of the Festival curtain raiser. He's currently around mid-range in the Cheltenham odds and there's a good chance that Elixir De Nutz can outrun his price.

Ultima Handicap Chase Betting Tips

(Tues, 14:50)

Lake View Lad to win and each-way @ 20/1 - BET NOW

Racing in the famous Trevor Hemmings silks, Lake View Lad is set to mount a bold bid in the Ultima off top-weight.

He hasn't been spotted since running out an impressive winner of the Rowland Meyrick Chase at Wetherby on Boxing Day over three-miles. He handles plenty of cut in the ground, which he's going to get here, and doesn't appear to have been handicapped out of this off a mark of 155.

He's unbeaten in two runs this season and has now been a very consistent performer for 15 months, finishing out of the money in just twice in 11 runs over fences.

He'll have to prove himself amongst the hustle and bustle of this big field, which he hasn't previously been accustomed to, but is priced accordingly in the Cheltenham betting and was likely put away with this race in mind following his impressive strong-travelling Christmas success, the form of which has worked out quite well.

Mares' Hurdle Betting Tips

(Tues, 16:10)

Elimay to win and each-way @ 25/1 - BET NOW

Willie Mullins has enjoyed a stranglehold on this event, winning nine of the 11 renewals since it was added to the Festival programme in 2008.

The Irish champion trainer seems set to land the pot again, with reigning champion Benie Des Dieux odds-on to oblige. There's up to five places offered in the each-way markets however and, on that basis, don't write off the claims of another Mullins mare, Elimay.

The French import made a fine start for her new trainer when she ran second to stablemate Good Thyne Tara in a Leopardstown Grade 2 at Christmas over this trip. She was returning from a year off the track and ran her stablemate, now rated 150, to within a half-length with Limini the thick end of six-lengths further back in third spot.

There is a strong chance that the JP McManus-owned Elimay will improve for that first run and she previously had decent Listed/Graded form over hurdles in France, so she is a viable alternative to the odds-on favourite in our racing tips for day one of Cheltenham.
