Cheltenham Gold Cup Antepost Betting Tips

The midpoint in the jumps season is almost here and with the New Year in sight the countdown to Cheltenham will intensify.

Here's a look at the Gold Cup as things stand with just three months to go until the Cheltenham Festival.

Al Boum Photo to win and each-way - BET NOW

He has yet to appear this season, though is set to make his now regular New Year's Day comeback at Tramore, but Al Boum Photo retains his perch as ante-post favourite to win a third straight Cheltenham Gold Cup. Having ended Willie Mullins' hoodoo in this race, he clung on gallantly back in March to repel Santini and retain his crown.

Santini meanwhile was turned over at Aintree in the Many Clouds Chase on his return, though he was surely inconvenienced by the low sun causing a host of fences to be left out there. His run in the King George on Boxing Day (fifth) was essentially a good effort with Kempton widely considered to be a track that shouldn't play to his strengths. Nicky Henderson will certainly feel Santini is on track for Cheltenham in March and he's available at 12/1 to go one better.

Waiting Patiently to win and each-way - BET NOW

Another King George player to catch the eye was Ruth Jefferson's Waiting Patiently, the fast-finishing second at Kempton. It was his first run for 385 days and his first proper attempt at the three-mile distance, given he unseated in the Christmas showpiece two years ago.

He's been a tough horse to get right but his trainer deserves an enormous amount of credit. Jefferson's dismay was clear to see after the Kempton run, with Waiting Patiently having made up an enormous amount of ground late in the race only to find Frodon had gone beyond recall in front.

With the manner in which he finished the race off, connections may be tempted with a Gold Cup bid, though arguably the steady nature of this year's King George would have helped him out.

Monalee to win and each-way - BET NOW

It's his Henry De Bromhead-trained stablemate Minella Indo that has garnered plenty of interest in the betting but Monalee isn't one to cast aside as a Gold Cup hopeful just yet.

He finished fourth back in the spring, beaten less than two lengths, on his first try in the 3m2f Blue Ribband. He only had three starts last season, agonisingly missing out in the Savills Chase at Leopardstown over Christmas en route to the Festival.

He was third behind Presenting Percy at Thurles over 2m6f on his comeback in November, an acceptable start. He tends to improve for a run and, if he runs well next time out, the current odds on him sneaking into the Gold Cup frame might look decent. He's one of the more plausible options at fancy prices.
