Darley July Cup 2018: Betting Tips & Preview

- 17:07, 11th July 2018
US Navy Flag disappointed at Royal Ascot but could bounce back in the Darley July Cup.

The feature race of Newmarket’s July Meeting takes place on Saturday. We have two selections with analysis of what will be a fantastic renewal of the Darley July Cup.

The Darley July Cup has been won by some of the most precocious sprinters in the world with the likes of Starspangledbanner, Oasis Dream, Pastoral Pursuits and Mayson among its winners and this year would appear to be another red hot renewal.

US Navy Flag to Win and Each-Way @ 5/1 - BET NOW

Capability of handling Newmarket’s July course is paramount to these speedsters and prior course form is always a good starting point when going through the form. It is therefore interesting that U S Navy Flag has been well backed now dropped in trip here.

Aidan O’Brien’s dual Group 1 winner has been a shade disappointing since being campaigned over the mile and particularly last time out when ridden too aggressively at Royal Ascot in the St James’s Palace Stakes, finishing ninth of 10 behind Without Parole.

However, a drop back to sprint trips looks like a smart move by his master trainer, his first Group 1 success coming over course and distance back in September when winning the Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes ahead of stablemate Fleet Review.

He followed that success with another Group 1 win in the Darley Dewhurst, leading home a Ballydoyle quartet of runners that included Breeders’ Cup Classic hope Mendelssohn amongst others.

It admittedly hasn’t gone to plan since that day but it’s likely he’s been showing plenty at home given the way he was backed before his disappointment at the Royal Meeting last time out and it would be no surprise to see this step back to 6f pay dividends.

Stablemates Actress, Sioux Nation, Different League, Intelligence Cross, Fleet Review, Declarationofpeace, Battle Of Jericho, Washington DC and Spirit Of Valour are all still in the line-up at this stage before declarations, but if U.S Navy Flag turns up in this race, he could be very hard to beat if he’s the pick of retained jockey Ryan Moore.

Redkirk Warrior to Win and Each-way @ 14/1 - BET NOW

One at a bigger price that looks interesting would have to be the Australian multiple Group 1 winner Redkirk Warrior.

He wasn’t at his best at Royal Ascot last time, but a lengthy quarantine process would appear to be a valid excuse for that effort and the fact his Australian rival went and won the race would suggest the form in rock solid.

Merchant Navy, the winner of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes last time received weight off Redkirk Warrior Down Under and it’s highly unlikely that he could have run his race that day. Australian Sprint form is some of the strongest around, and he looks overpriced and an each-way play at double figure odds.
