Friday Chester Betting Tips

3:15 Chester Tips

Metier – 0.5pt Each Way – 6/1 (6 places)

singleSelection

My first selection is Metier in the big one, the Chester Cup.

This horse is absolutely in his element when the mud is flying and he certainly gets that today at Chester.

He is 3/4 over Hurdles when racing on Heavy, with his other win coming on Soft. His two wins on the Flat have come on Heavy and Yielding to Soft too. He arguably ran a career best last time on Good to Soft over 1m6f but he certainly gave the impression that he would have enjoyed it softer and/or a longer trip as he was only just getting going late to chase the winner home. Therefore, I think the soft ground here and the step up in trip, will be right up his street.

Metier and Wise Eagle pulled nicely clear at Musselburgh last month and the latter horse went on to finish second in the Sagaro Stakes (Group 3) behind Coltrane earlier this month, so that form looks rock solid. Given Metier achieved a RPR of 103 last time, a rise from 94 to 97 for Metier looks very fair, especially considering there should be more improvement to come from the ground and trip.

The only negative is that he is drawn Stall 14 but hopefully over this 2m2.5f trip, Saffie Osborne will have plenty of time to manoeuvre him into a nice position. She has only ridden for Harry Fry three times but from that she has one win and one second.

The horse was entered in this race last year but he was a late withdrawal due to vet’s certificate, so you wonder if they have been lining him up for a crack at this race for a while now. SkyBet are offering an extra place here and I’m happy to take 6/1 for that extra place rather than the 13/2 on offer elsewhere.

Christopher Wood – 0.5pt Each Way – 18/1 (Bet365 & William Hill, 4 places)

singleSelection

My second selection is in the other big race today, the Chester Plate.

Again, I have chosen a horse that has raced both on the Flat and over obstacles. This time, I have selected Christopher Wood for Venetia Williams.

This horse was rated 150 at his peak over hurdles and has now dropped down to a mark of 130 since focussing more on chasing. Even still he has been running very consistently this year with three RPRs of 135, 135 and 134 and he should be cherry ripe for this fitness wise.

This horse has not run on the Flat since 2020 but I certainly think it is well worth a go. Especially off a very low mark of 82. He won off a mark of 81 over a mile in 2018 and he won again off 85 over 1m4f in 2020. In those runs, he achieved RPRs of 90 and 91, so a mark of 82 should be well within his ability.

His best form over obstacles has come on Good to Soft or Soft ground, so he should be at home in this Soft going and I also think this trip should be right up his street at this stage of his career. Last time out, he kept on well over 2m4.5f over fences on Good to Soft ground.

Similar to Metier, Christopher Wood has a horrible draw in 17 but he has a top booking in Hollie Doyle and hopefully she can get herself into a good position. Over this trip, she should have plenty of time to do so compared with the racing over sprint trips.

I think he has been underestimated here at 18/!
