“This day has been very kind to me throughout the years so hopefully I can turn my form around and nick a few winners from Newbury and Newcastle on Saturday.” JJ

Newbury 1.50

There are a couple in here that are progressing and could be anything, namely Jabulani and Master Dancer, who both bolted up last time.

However, I can't see past AIR HORSE ONE (7/2) for Harry Fry and Noel Fehilly. The six-year-old reeled off a hat-trick last season including one big field handicap at Ascot, in similar conditions to what he'll face on Saturday.

After that win he went close in a hot County Hurdle at Cheltenham won by Arctic Fire, who bounced back to something like his best, and his best is a grade one horse.

Also, the selection tends to always come on for his first run of the season, and he didn't run badly at all last time in a superb handicap at Kempton won by Elgin, who went on to win the Greatwood next time.

Newbury 2.25

Next up at Newbury is this year's Ladbrokes Intermediate Handicap Hurdle, and it looks a cracker on paper.

It seems like Carlie Parcs has been a talk horse forever, and bar one impressive win he hasn't done much.

High Bridge tends to always run well when Alex Ferguson can claim seven but MOUNT MEWS (4/1) is the outsider of the fancied horses and he's my bet here.

The selection progressed nicely last season for Malcolm Jefferson, including a 49 length grade two victory on heavy ground and a decent second to Pingshou in the grade one Top Novices' Hurdle at Aintree on good.

I also feel he ran a lovely race last time, travelling superbly into the race before a slight mistake at the third last and a big mistake at the second last. But what attracted me most to this horse is his superb attitude under pressure, so you know if it comes to a fight he'll give you everything he's got.

Finally, Brian Hughes is one of my favourite jockeys in the UK and a perfect match for a horse like this.

Newcastle 3.20

Obviously, Buveur D'Air will win the Fighting Fifth, so I'll leave that race alone – although if you can get anything close to evens for Irving without the favourite I would take that.

This two mile seven and a half furlong handicap chase interests me far more. Wakanda ran a decent prep for this last time and will be tough to pass should he get bowling along in front.

But I'm a big fan of BEWARE THE BEAR (4/1) for Nicky Henderson and Sean Bowen.

I tipped him for the Four-Miler at Cheltenham but his rider lost an iron and he found it tough thereafter.

That race may have left it's mark next time as well at Ayr, where he ran well but not up to his best. However, now off of a mark of 145 he has a big chance in this, especially based on some of his superb from from last year, including a win here and when he comfortably beat the talented Singlefarmpayment at Ascot in what turned out to be a brilliant race form wise.
