Monday Horse Racing Tips

2m (1m7f182y) Cazoo Handicap Chase (Class 5) (5yo+ 0-100)

Getaman – 1pt Each Way – 8/1 (Bet365, 3 places – Each Way Extra)

The first selection today is Getaman at 8/1 with Bet365 using their Each Way Extra market to get 3 places.

This horse is in the same DJ Jeffreys Racing Club as Ayr Of Elegance that I recently put up.

I put this horse up last time out and he was brought down through no fault of his own.

The time before he made a nice chasing debut and he was due to come on a lot for that run after a 217 break. Sadly, due to the misfortune, we were never able to find out.

He is a horse that looks to be on a mark that he can be winning races off through the summer.

The blinkers were left off on his chasing debut but came on for the second run suggesting that first run was purely just for fitness and he was ready to go the second time. As I said, he was then brought down during that second race. However, the blinkers are kept on, so it looks like he is ready to go again.

9/1 looks a nice price and there is enough juice in it to drop to 8/1 for the extra place. Providing the horse has more luck in running than last time, I’d be disappointed if he could not be involved in the finish.

I was concerned that they might just give him a quiet outing to rebuild his confidence after being brought down but given the blinkers are kept on here, I assume they are going to be trying with him.

4:00 Southwell Tips

3m½f (3m60y) Southwell Racecourse Supporting Racing Staff Week Novices' Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) (4yo+ 0-105)

Ben Lily – 1pt Win – 4/1 (Bet365, Paddy Power & Betfair)

The second selection is Ben Lily and I’m playing a 1pt Win bet at 4/1. Annoyingly the price has dropped from 5/1 to 4/1 as I type this but I’m happy to still play this at 4/1.

This horse has form in his last three races of 322. In each of those races he has been keeping on but the horses who finished in front got away from him at the business end of the race. He just seems to be lacking that turn of food required over trips around 2m5f-2m6f.

The last run when finishing second at Ffos Las was his best run to date, only going down a length to Loved Out and again keeping on well. I was there that day as we had one of ours running and this horse looked like he was due to be getting his head in front soon.

The way he runs well but gets outpaced late on despite keeping on well suggests that a step up in trip is needed and today he gets that. This will be his first run over 3 miles.

He rather cruelly got put up 1lb for his last run but that was under Tom Scudamore and today Philip Armson takes the ride and claims 5lb, so he is effectively 4lb lower than his last run.

Between the step up in trip which I’d expect to bring about improvement and also the fact he is 4lb lower than last time, I feel this should be enough to see him finally get his head in front here.

4:45 Pontefract Tips

6f Northern Commercials Fiat e-Ducato, Zero Emissions Handicap (Class 5) (3yo+ 0-70)

Mr Orange – 1pt Each Way – 10/1 (Bet365, 3 places)

The final selection is Mr Orange at Pontefract and I’m playing 1pt Each Way at 10/1.

This horse is a 7-time winner at Pontefract.

He is an 11-time winner over 6f and 5 of them have come on Good to Firm ground (3 on Good and 3 on Good to Soft).

He tends to show up in these summer months and around this track with Graham Lee also riding him for four of those victories.

The 7 wins at Pontefract have come off marks of 61, 69, 78, 71, 75, 70 & 55.

The win off 55 was in September last year with these exact conditions – Pontefract, Class 5, 6f and Good to Firm.

He now returns with these conditions, off 3lb lower.

For all bar one run since May 2018, he has run in Cheekpieces. The one time he didn’t, he wore no headgear at all. Interestingly, he is given 1st time Blinkers here and hopefully that sparks him back into life and he can rediscover his previous form.

The last run is a concern, he had no real excuse that day and he finished 7th. It did look a very competitive race and the form is working out reasonably well. I’m hoping that was a bit of a sighter to see where he was at and now, he will be trying, hence the change of headgear. It may well be that he was expected to run better last time, he didn’t and the change of headgear is clutching at straws and I’m sure we will find out one way or another at around 4:50!

Total Outlay – 5 points.
