It's the middle day of the Northumberland Plate Festival at Newcastle on Friday evening and the Gosforth Park tracks boasts the Group 3 William Hill Hoppings Fillies' Stakes as the feature race on their seven-race card (17:40-20:55).

Our best bets for the Friday evening Newcastle action are here.

Sea Empress to win and each-way - BET NOW

Despite a flop in the Oaks at Epsom, Roger Varian's Zeyaadah will be popular in the betting to land this Hoppings Fillies' Stakes. Her earlier Cheshire Oaks second was a good effort and she had, of course, won all three starts last term. It's reasonable to anticipate a big effort with her sights now lowered.

This has attracted a decent field however and plenty of her rivals make appeal. William Haggas makes a two-pronged attack on a race he won with Nkosikazi last term, the in-form Newmarket handler now saddling Lilac Road and Sea Empress.

Tom Marquand has pinned his colours to the mast of the former, placed in Listed races at Goodwood (1m) and Newbury (1m2f) in the last month, but there could be decent improvement to come from Cieren Fallon's mount.

Sea Empress made a winning debut here over a mile under Fallon in October and, after 197 days off, came up shy at Newbury in Listed fare on seasonal return. She has won a Chelmsford novice in good style since and is open to further improvement upped in grade for her return to Newcastle. She's given each-way claims in a trappy event.

Aljady to win and each-way - BET NOW

Robert Cowell's Aljady has won 7-20 career starts and, while yet to strike in pattern-race company, his record stands to scrutiny in the context of this competitive sprint handicap. He won four times last year after joining this stable from Richard Fahey and simply didn't run a bad race in his seven starts, going well in the likes of Goodwood's Stewards' Cup and behind the smart Dakota Gold in a Nottingham Listed evening in defeat.

He ran well in a Conditions race at Chelmsford on seasonal bow, finishing a nose-second, in April and that is his only experience of an all-weather surface to date. He then ran a fine fifth in the Group 3 Palace House at Newmarket (5f, good to firm) before being held in Haydock's Achilles Stakes most recently as King's Lynn won.

He's potentially well-treated from a mark of 99 on what will be his first go at a handicap on the all-weather and he should finish to good effect over this minimum trip if the pacesetters go off hard in front.

Tanasoq to win and each-way - BET NOW

Tanasoq's previous form on the all-weather isn't much to shout about but he hasn't been with Jim Goldie that long and he's been shaping well on turf. The straight five-furlongs around here is worth exploring from what's a declining mark.

Paul Mulrennan rode him for the first time at Ayr 17 days ago and they finished second-best, unable to peg back a dominant front-runner but showing a pleasing attitude to come through and get second. Rated 2lb lower in this sphere, it's worth taking a chance that Mulrennan can get a tune from the eight-year-old again.
