Day Two of the Aintree National Festival is again pretty tough for us punters, but there are some interesting each-way wagers and one in particular on the card. As with Thursday’s selections I am also going to go to the away meetings as well for a betting interest.
Aintree Tips –
3.40 – Aintree – I am not really interested in the first three races on the card from a punting perspective, so even though there will be 30 runners hurtling over the National fences over nearly two and three quarter miles, this renewal of the Topham trophy still looks worth a second glance.
Those at the top of the market that have fair claims include Dunowen Point, fourth last year and 8lbs lower, Double Ross, running over his best trip with give but perhaps poorly handicapped and Ma Filleule. The last named ran a cracking race in the three mile Bayliss and Harding at Cheltenham and this step down to this trip with some give in the ground will suit her perfectly.
However, at a much bigger price I am rather sweet on the claims of SOLL. He ran a much better race than his finishing position suggested in the Grand National last year when in with every chance of being placed turning for home, but weakening badly. I have always thought a fast run race over this trip with give in the ground (rain expected overnight) would suit him and at betting odds of 33/1 he is the each-way call.

4.50 – Aintree – Another huge field for this two and a half mile handicap hurdle and following his slightly disappointing run in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham, ALAIVAN looks fairly priced up at betting odds of around 16/1.
Jonjo’s charge was THE eye-catcher in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury coming from way of the pace to finish best of all, beaten five and a half lengths by Splash of Ginge, off a slow pace. With the overnight rain sure to suit I expect a massive run off a rating of 132.
Of course in such a big field there are plenty of dangers and top of that list is Caid Du Berlais (should like conditions) and budding chaser and Irish raider Zabana. The latter eased home in a lesser race last time out but even a 13lbs hike may not be enough to keep him out of the action at the business end.

Wolverhampton Tips –
5.50 – Wolverhampton – I am really wary of Captain Scooby off his current mark of 51, less his rider’s 5lbs claim, but I still get the impression that the minimum trip may suit him a tad better than this six furlongs.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire though, I am going to row in with another rogue in the form of SEWN UP. Rated as high as 77 last year, this enigmatic individual has not really been putting it all in of late especially on the Fibresand, but two fair enough runs over course and distance off this mark tend to suggest that he retains the ability to still win a race of this nature.
That last run saw the selection return to hold-up tactics with a hood on for the first time and if Shane Kelly keeps him out the back early on I think that he can run a huge race at betting odds of around 10/1.
Ivestar kept on nicely at Kempton Park last time out to be perceived a player here, while a chance can also be given to Avondream especially with Milton Bradley’s team in good form at the moment.
