Doncaster leads the way again with the third day of the Leger meeting alongside flat cards at Chester and Sandown Park with twilight action from Salisbury. Here are my best bets in a difficult day for punters – PJ.
Doncaster Tips –
2.10 – Doncaster – In the hope that the ground description doesn’t have the word ‘firm’ in it then I think STOMACHION can take all the beating in this famous staying event, the Mallard Handicap.
Sir Michael Stoute’s charge was a beaten favourite last timeout at York but was a wholesale victim of a slow pace set by the eventual winner Glenard. Able to race from the same mark again here of 92, I think that this son of Duke of Marmalade should see out this extended trip and prove too strong at the weights for the likes of Retirement Plan and Sir Walter Scott.
The former just got outpaced in the Ebor Handicap when finishing fifth and connections will be hoping for a stronger pace from the start to bring his guaranteed stamina into play.
However, I think that Sir Walter Scott is an even bigger danger. Luca Cumani’s charge ran well on his opening start of the season in the Steventon Stakes, form which has been well advertised since. On the back of that run readers will recall I had a major each-way bet on him at huge odds for the Ebor and he agonisingly just finished off the placed horses in seventh spot, staying on strongly.
What you have to remember about the Newmarket raider is that the York race was only the fourth of his career and rather like the selection I fancy Luca will be hoping that there is still a bit of juice left in the Town Moor turf come 2.10.
Of the remainder, Shwaiman is finally being shown some mercy by the handicapper, while at the bottom of the weights ADVENTURE SEEKER could run well after Vent De Force got first run on him in the Melrose Stakes at York last month and is possibly worth saver behind the selection.

Chester Tips –
3.05 – Chester – I fancy that the ground may just be a bit on the fast side for the remarkably consistent Beau Nash and I wonder if Richard Hannon may just wait for another day with his charge.
A truly run race looks very much on the cards here with Dr Red Eye set to bounce out from stall two and Lady Frances from seven. The former would ideally want easier going as well even though he recently won on a fast surface at Epsom and while three-year-old Top of the Glas also likes to get his toe in he looks the most likely of the above three to trouble my fancy RELATED.
Martin Lane’s charge didn’t act around Epsom when behind Dr Red Eye, but then made all at Goodwood before a lack lustre display in a better class race back at the Sussex track when he could never really get a foothold in the contest.
Back down in class here and with the faster ground almost certainly in his favour I take this relatively lightly raced four-year-old to bounce back to winning form despite his 10-box draw.

Sandown Tips –
4.30 – Sandown – BIG BAZ looked a potentially high class handicapper when he started the season running a promising race in a red-hot event at the Newmarket Guineas’ meeting.
However, the wheels came off after that and he was given a mid-season break, returning two weeks ago to run a fair race at Ffos Las behind Merry Me. He looked likely to win a furlong and a half out before lack of condition in the dead ground possibly became an issue.
Back on a sound surface and in what looks an easier challenge, this scopey son of Pivotal can land this 66-80 rated event before going onto contest better handicaps in the autumn.

Salisbury Tips –
5.10 – Salisbury – This looks a difficult little nursery over seven furlongs to unravel with several of these making their handicap bows so as always the market should be a good barometer as to their chances.
However, I think we may get a double figure price out of PRIMA PAGINA. Jon Scargill’s charge was far from disgraced on her first two starts on the Polytrack at Lingfield and then on fast ground at Leicester before blowing out in what was admittedly a nice little maiden event at Yarmouth.
On the back of that effort she has been given a handicap mark of just 50 and I think is worth persevering with off what could prove to be a more than fair rating. This seventh furlong won’t prove a problem and she is taken to surprise the likes of On High and top weight British Embassy. The last named ran two races at Pontefract and last time out at Kempton that suggested this would be his kind of set-up, but in between put up a desperate performance at Leicester. He could be worth another chance to show that run was all wrong.
