Brighton leads the way on Monday on the flat with two national hunt meetings at Newton Abbot and Perth on the racing agenda. Here are my best bets of the day – PJ.
Brighton Tips –
3.30 – Brighton – Top weight Siouxperhero shouldn’t be written off here even though he is set to run off a career high mark of 75 as he should have the fast pace and fast ground he needs both of which he didn’t get at Leicester last time out.
However, he will do well to get to the likely leader BAYLEYF after the selection bounced back to form when landing a gamble over course and distance last time out. A 6lbs penalty is fair enough (still very well in on some of his old form) and if he can dominate from the start he should take a deal of beating.
The main problem for the Lee Carter runner is Royal Connection, another speedster that likes to dominate from the start. Waseem Faris is dangerously well handicapped and from a stable flying at the moment, but arguably better over six furlongs.
BET NOW - BAYLEYF
4.00 – Brighton – With Whitby Jet, Diletta Tommasa and Hesbaan all in good form this looks a really good heat for the grade and it will need the three-year-old CAPTAIN GEORGE to take another step forward to score off a rating of 72.
The James Fanshawe trained charge has been making steady if unspectacular progress, but showed last time out at Lingfield Park that he needs at least every yard of this 10 furlongs and could put his seniors to the sword here granted the run of the race.
Law Keeper is the other youngster in the field that merits consideration following his third last time out at Leicester. That run can to a certain extent be forgiven as he pulled way too hard in the small field through the opening exchanges and had nothing more to give through the final quarter mile or so. There is little doubt that the James Tate runner is better than that and is clearly worth another chance and with two front runners set to line up he should settle nicely. One of those is the progressive Hesbaan, although he is not guaranteed to stay this extra yardage.
BET NOW – CAPTAIN GEORGE
5.30 – Brighton – Some inexperienced riders on show here and a true run race looks assured with the likes of Big City Boy and Arabian Flight in attendance and that will suit the majority of the other runners and in particular BERWIN.
Sylvester Kirk has to a certain extent been a horse without a trip for a while, with a mile and a half a shade too far. It is interesting that all his best runs have come when there has been a good end to end gallop on and that is the scenario here.
The fact that he is almost certainly running over a trip on the sharp side is a negative, but that will be factored into the price and there is little doubt for exchange players that you will get a much bigger price in the run.
Old boy Stonecrabstomorrow is a better horse over seven furlongs, which means the other one to consider is probably Anginola. Laura Morgan’s charge was probably sent for home a shade too early last time out and if Charlotte Jenner can hold her mount together for a big longer it is hard to see the five-year-old being out of the frame.
BET NOW – BERWIN (e/w)
Perth Tips –
3.50 – Perth – This will be run at a sound pace and if Toledo Gold jumps fluently all the way around then he would have sound claims of bagging this nice prize following his surprising his shock success at Sedgefield last time out. However, these fences are a deal stiffer and there should be little between him and the third home that day Claragh Native.
Robin’s Command is the progressive horse in the line-up having started his winning spree off a mark of 72 and three wins later finds himself off a rating of 108. While he is in such good form his chance is respected but I make this between the top two, Clondaw Knight and SERGEANT PINK.
The former has his easiest task for some time having run in some races over two and a half miles. This drop in trip off a solid pace will help. However, he is coming off a 139 day break and Dianne Sayer’s runner is preferred.
The selection has been running really well on the flat through the summer and his last run at Cartmel can be safely written off as he raced way too freely and simply didn’t get home over that extended trip. A repeat of his second to Get It On at the Lake District track in May off a 2lbs lower mark makes him a huge runner here if he can fence flently through the opening exchanges.
BET NOW – SERGEANT PINK
