It’s the first day of the St Leger meeting at Doncaster with the other afternoon cards coming from Carlisle and over the sticks at Uttoxeter. There is one twilight meet at Kempton Park kicking off at 5.45, here are my main betting tips of the day – PJ.
Doncaster Tips –
2.00 – Doncaster – Despite winning a very poor seller in good style at Catterick, I was disappointing with Stardrifter’s subsequent run at Newcastle in a fair nursery. However, on reflection I have marked up that success as he pulled way too hard and getting weight all round here I think he can put up a bold display and is the main danger at a price to the top weight SALATEEN.
Kevin Ryan’s charge won his maiden with aplomb at Chester and on the back of that effort was thought good enough to contest the Acomb Stakes at York. Considering he was very free for the first quarter mile the son of Dutch Art ran well to get to within four lengths of the classy Dutch Connection and he can defy a mark of 92 here.
Of the remainder, Grey Sensation won very nicely at Newcastle, but may need a step up to a mile to progress further against these better class rivals.
BET NOW – SALATEEN
5.15 – Doncaster – I think both the Scarbrough and Park Hill Stakes look tough betting events even though the fields aren’t huge which probably begs the question why am I having a go in this 22 runner sprint handicap?
Well, I feel there are at least a couple of horses we can go to war with here at hopefully double figure prices starting with SINGEUR. The seven-year-old is not quite the horse he was but that is reflected in his falling handicap mark, from 90 to 81, and getting a good tow through a fast run five on good ground is right up his street.
It looks like another veteran, Hazelrigg, is being aimed at another shot at Ayr’s Western meeting judged on the way he ran too prominently last time out at Thirsk despite the fact he is a confirmed hold-up spirnter, so the other seasoned campaigner I want onside is previous winner of this race, EVEN STEVENS. Good ground is his preserve when he is racing away from his favoured artificial surfaces and this represents a much easier task than his previous outings at Epsom and here two outings back, while his last run at Sandown came on ground much too slow on a track too stiff for him.
Go Nani Go is well handicapped, but needs the ground to dry out, while I have the utmost respect for the four-year-old Dangerous Age and Commanche. The last named has been knocking on the winning door of late, but wouldn’t want the ground to dry out too much.
BET NOW – SINGEUR
Carlisle Tips –
I thought this was the hardest of the meetings on offer today although there are some interesting runners. Despite the readiness of his success at Yarmouth I wanted to try and oppose Frontline Phantom in the 2.50 off his new career high mark and I think that the make-up of the race would suit CLOUD MONKEY following his good run behind a progressive filly at Newcastle last time out despite the drop in distance.
Later on, BURANO has major claims in the feature event of the day at 4.35 with the proviso that he settles early on; the stiff finish should suit him down to the ground, but he is definitely a bet in play.
BET NOW – CLOUD MONKEY
BET NOW - BURANO
Kempton Tips –
7.15 – Kempton – Following her strong staying success in a maiden over a mile and a quarter at Bath the Andrew Balding trained Royal Warranty looks sure to appreciate this step up in trip and should play a major role as long as they go a decent pace from flag fall.
She could prove to be the biggest danger to BILLY BLUE now that he is dropped in class, raised in distance and is tried in a visor for the first time in his career.
His last run is worth forgiving as he was rather lit up by the cheek pieces, but on his previous performance here behind Masterpaver the son of High Chaparral has solid claims.
By Jupiter’s best runs to date have come on an artificial surface and she may well be worth another try on the Polytrack after disappointing on dead ground at Ffos Las.
