Rob Eddy’s Racing Tips: Saturday 9th March

Sandown races

The final Saturday before the Cheltenham Festival is upon us and the traditional Imperial Cup at Sandown is the main attraction. We have a selection for that big race among our best racing tips.

14:25 Sandown

Extra Mag to Win and Each-way @ 9/1 - BET NOW

David Pipe has continued the strong tradition set by his father of having an excellent record in the Imperial Cup, with the Pond House handler having landed this Grade 3 prize three times already.

He looks to have another strong candidate in the shape of the relatively unexposed Extra Mag. The selection looked all set to win on debut at Wetherby before unseating at the last on his jumping introduction but he made no mistake at Exeter in January.

Since then, the French import has finished runner-up at Kempton behind Precious Cargo when spotting the winner 7lb. That form took a nice boost on Friday when Precious Cargo was an easy winner over this C&D at Sandown.

Tom Scudamore's mount will sport new cheekpieces in the Imperial Cup and has the potential for further improvement, ensuring he looks a decent bet at current racing odds to give his trainer another success in this traditional pre-Cheltenham event.

13:20 Sandown

The Knot Is Tied to Win and Each-way @ 5/2 - BET NOW

Second up in our racing tips is The Knot Is Tied, who looks a strong contender to give Bryony Frost victory in the opening race on the Sandown card.

The partnership have gained useful experience over timber in three runs, most recently when going down narrowly at Huntingdon on his handicap bow last month. The in-form winner of that race came out and won again next time and so an increase of just 2lb looks fair for Neil King's runner here.

The main danger looking at the racing betting should be Katpoli, though Dr Richard Newland's charge has a few questions to answer now.

He has twice run well in better races at Cheltenham this term but comes here having let favourite-backers down last month at Wincanton, when he failed to jump well enough. He makes his handicap bow now but might just struggle in giving away weight to an improving rival.

15:15 Wolverhampton

Oh This Is Us to Win and Each-way @ 5/2 - BET NOW

It really was an admirable effort from Oh This Is Us to win a Lingfield handicap last month, given the race was not run to suit and he was lumping weight to the runner-up.

He's already twice a Listed winner but that run rates as good as anything he has done and a hat-trick in his grade beckons for the Richard Hannon-trained six-year-old. The yard is in fine early spring form, winning two from four lately, and Tom Marquand really got a nice smooth passage from Oh This Is Us last time.

The improving Island Of Life for William Haggas is a C&D winner and thriving since stepped up to this mile trip, but she will have to pull out some more here to thwart the selection.
