Saturday Horse Racing Betting Tips
3:40 Curragh
Royal Scotsman – 2pt Win – 2/1 (General)
My first selection comes in the big race of the day, the Irish 2000 Guineas and I’m sticking with Royal Scotsman.
I put Royal Scotsman up to win the British equivalent of this race and he ended up finishing 3rd behind Chaldean and Hi Royal. However, everything went wrong for him that day, so he ran exceptionally well to finish 3rd. He could have done without the rain and it came down at Newmarket, he had to make his run away from the front two, he refused to settle and he also got a bump after just 2f.
This horse has done very little wrong. He was extremely impressive when winning the Richmond Stakes last year, breaking the Juvenile course record in the process to show he has plenty of speed. He underperformed in the Gimcrack next time out but his trainers confirmed he scoped badly after that and his bloods were also off, so you can draw a line through that. He bounced back to form with a career best when upped in trip to 7f in the Dewhurst where he just failed in to reign in Chaldean, going down by a head. Obviously Chaldean went on to win the 2000 Guineas, so there is nothing wrong with that.
It is worth remembering that he was sired by Gleneagles, his wins included both 2000 Guineas’ races, so he is bred to do this job.
He gets the Good ground he wants here and if he gets a kinder run through the race, I think he has an huge chance of landing this prestigious race for his connections.
4:25 York
Redih – 1pt Each Way – 13/2 (4 places)
My next selection comes from the Class 3 1m Handicap over at York and I’m on the side of Reidh.
I was giving word for this horse on his debut and he ran very well over 7f. I popped it in my track with the note that he ran very well and should be even better up in trip.
They stepped him up to a mile next time out and he ran another very solid race to finish 3rd again.
The winner of his debut race was Captain Winters who has gone on to land a Listed race early this month, achieving a RPR of 105.
The winner of his second race was Hi Royal who finished second in the 2000 Guineas (RPR of 115) and who goes for the Irish equivalent today.
So, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the form of those races.
They gave the horse a break before he made a come back at Pontefract earlier this month. He tried to make all and the front three pulled clear but the two others got the better of him late on. He wasn’t given the hardest of rides after the race was gone and he was still only beaten 1.75 lengths.
I think an opening mark of 78 is very fair and he can run a big race off bottom weight in this 0-95.
4:30 Cartmel
Fidux – 2pt Win – 2/1 (Bet365)
Last but not least we have our old friend Fidux in the 3m1.5f Handicap Chase at Cartmel.
I have put this horse up the last twice and, on both occasions, he has finished second! So, I’m hoping it’s a case of third time lucky for the 10-year-old.
Cartmel is a pretty unique track. It’s left-handed, it’s very sharp and it’s flat. It’s pretty similar to Newton Abbott, where this horse has ran well previously. His best runs have also came at Haydock and Worcester which are flat left-handed tracks. So there is plenty of reason to think he will enjoy racing around Cartmel.
We know he can be competitive of this mark of 131 as it is unaltered from his last two runs where he has achieved RPRs of 136 and 137.
I’m a big fan of The Wolf and I put him up when he won last time but he is extremely inconsistent, so the worry with him is whether he can back up that run, especially now he is back up 7lb. At the prices, I’m happy to take him on with a more reliable type. Go Another One could be well handicapped if returning to form but we don’t have any recent form to go off. The other two in the field look very regressive and it’s hard to make a case for them.
Like I said, I just hope it’s third time lucky for Fidux as he deserves to get his head in front.
Total Outlay – 6 points.
