With Lingfield and Ayr already abandoned due to the weather, the sole meeting remaining comes from Southwell where the all-weather action takes centre stage.
Star Ascending Win Only @ 9/4 - BET NOW
In the opener, a race restricted to apprentice riders, Edward Greatrex will not be riding in these races for much longer and he gets the ride on hat-trick seeking Star Ascending. The gelding’s recent course form reads 12211 and he can go in again with a relatively experienced rider in the saddle.
The way the six-year-old won last time over course and distance suggested he would be capable of going in again, particularly only carrying a 6lb penalty and while he has yet to score off a mark this high, he is clearly in the form of his life.
The fact the selection is versatile with regards his running style is a further positive, particularly from a slightly wider draw than ideal (8) and he will prove hard to beat; there would still appear to be some juice in his early price of 9/4.
Jason Watson is proving to be one to watch going forward this season and he takes 7lb off the back of French Mix.
The filly has already won on the all-weather, recording a win at Dundalk when trained by Joseph O’Brien in Ireland but there are concerns over how he will go on this unique surface as she is not bred for this test. If she can overcome that potential negative, she could prove to be the main danger on just her second start for this yard.
Queens Royale Win and Each-Way @ 9/1 BET NOW
Queens Royale has been in superb form of late, winning four of her last seven starts and she would appear to have each-way claims once again after not being seen to best effect here last time out, despite still finishing third.
That was an apprentice contest and Robert Winston gets back on board today, a jockey who has won on the filly three times. There should be no problem getting to the front from their handy draw (5), and it would be no surprise to see her in the money once more for a trainer who does particularly well with these types. At odds of 9/1, she could be the value bet in the race.
Archimedes Win Only @ 11/4 - BET NOW
In the finale on the card, Archimedes is worth another shot back down at his optimum trip. He was backed like defeat was out the question last time over further but will be better suited to the flying five furlong straight track here, and the two-time course and distance winner can get his head back in front having won in higher classes of races than this in the past.
Furthermore, the yard has hit some form in recent weeks and the jockey booking of Josephine Gordon should be seen as a positive. It is likely his price will contract from 11/4 and he deserves to be outright favourite for this contest.
