Wednesday's Horse Racing Betting Tips & Predictions - 23rd September

There is some excellent jumps racing on offer on Wednesday, with a Grade 1 winner returning at Perth and the Kerry National taking place at Listowel.

We've picked out three tips from across the five meetings in total from Goodwood (13.00-16.40, Flat), Redcar (13.00-16.55, Flat), Kempton (16.25-20.00, all-weather), alongside the jumps fare at Perth (13.55-17.50) and Listowel (14.10-17.40).

Wednesday's Horse Racing Predictions

13:50 Goodwood

Willie John to win and each-way - BET NOW

After winning his first two starts - one for William Haggas in late 2017 and one for Roger Varian in August 2018 - Willie John hasn't exactly gone on with that early promise.

He's still quite lightly-raced, however, with just eight further starts and a few of those have come in Group/Listed company. Of those defeats, two have come here at Goodwood and offered plenty of promise.

He chased home a smart performer in Elarqam here last May (1m2f, good) and then finished a fine fourth in a strong mile handicap at the Glorious Meeting here this summer.

Given that he stays a mile and a quarter, a drop to 7f at Ascot last time didn't see him to best effect. Back over a mile on this quirky circuit that he acts on, eased 1lb by the assessor and in a weaker race, there's a strong chance Willie John can get the job done for a yard boasting a 23 per cent strike-rate in recent weeks.

16:15 Perth

La Bague Au Roi to win and each-way - BET NOW

A Wednesday afternoon treat up in Scotland as dual Grade 1-winner La Bague Au Roi makes her first start of what is set to be her final season in training, according to trainer Warren Greatrex.

Things didn't go her way last term, the Lambourn handler expressing regret that he put her forward in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby on soft ground in November on her comeback, a race she didn't enjoy.

Creditable third-place finishes at Huntingdon and Doncaster followed before La Bague Au Roi finished fifth in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown in the spring - a solid effort.

Cheltenham has never been her thing, but she was going well enough in the Festival Plate there before unseating Richard Johnson, her season then ended prematurely by the pandemic.

She goes well fresh and gets ground to suit here, with Greatrex confident she'll relish Perth. Last year was the first time she has failed to make a winning return and - despite top weight- La Bague Au Roi has the class to correct that now.

16:30 Listowel

La Bague Au Roi to win and each-way - BET NOW

Henry De Bromhead and Rachel Blackmore teamed up to win the Kerry National last year with Poker Party and they might have the winning hand again this time with Spyglass Hill.

A good stay over hurdles (winner at three-miles), he ended his first term over jumps with a first success at Gowran Park (2m4f, heavy) having fallen late on when holding a big claim in a Grade 3 at Navan previously.

He was as short as 10/1 for the Galway Plate on his return to action and was travelling with real purpose before Blackmore had to pull him up following a jumping error after midway. He's in great hands to improve his fencing and, off 146 again, could play a big part in the Kerry National with a clear round.
