Hamilton started in eighth place at the Red Bull Ring after a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change. From there he could only muster a fourth place finish to claim 12 points, while bitter rival Vettel took second place to extend his lead to 20 World Championship points.

Hamilton can be backed at even money to take the chequered flag at Silverstone. It’s a track which suits his driving style, as his victory last year meant he matched Nigel Mansell’s record of four wins as a British driver on home soil. His teammate Bottas is closing in, now just 15 points behind. Vettel is 5/2 with most bookmakers, but one is offering much better odds of 11/4!

“This is an intense battle which I’m loving,” said Hamilton. “But I want to win this championship. Right now I’m 20 points behind. I don’t have a crystal ball but it doesn’t look great at the moment. The bigger that gaps gets, the more the pressure builds. But there are still 11 races to go. That’s a long, long way and the momentum can easily switch around in just one race.”
