The prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony returns for another year with the biggest names of sports gathering in the Los Angeles of the UK, Birmingham, for the star-studded event.

In a big shake up this year, BBC haven’t released the nominees for this main award, waiting for the night to give fans a chance to name their BBC SPOTY winner of 2018.

In what has been an unbelievable year in sport, the categories are hotly contested.

Easyodds has a number of betting markets available for you to compare the odds, but we will be walking you through what we reckon will happen on the night.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year Winner

Harry Kane to win @ 6/4 – BET NOW

Let’s start of the biggie; Harry Kane will have no problems heading into the ceremony as the bookies favourite as the England captain led from the front to take his country into the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.

The Tottenham star won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, the first Englishman to win the trophy since SPOTY host Gary Linekar did back in 1986 and has been consistently netting for club and country all year in big moments.

The absolute highlight for the 25-year-old striker must be the last-minute winner in the opening World Cup match against Tunisia which really set the tone for the tournament for the Three Lions.

Yet a late goal in the Nations League against Croatia last month has got the nation dreaming of another summer to remember as England head to Portugal next June for the finals of the Nations League.

With no runaway winner to be found among the nominees for the award this year, Harry Kane at an odds-on price looks like a safe bet in the BBC SPOTY odds.

Geraint Thomas to win @ 3/1 – BET NOW

Elsewhere, Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas is just behind Harry Kane in the BBC SPOTY betting.

The 32-year-old Welshman became the third ever Brit to win the gruelling tour in its history leading the standings for over half the event untouched for the final eleven stages of the competition.

The joint-leader for Team Sky was supported by a third-place finish for Chris Froome to finish third in the team classification behind Movistar Team and Bahrain-Merida in first and second respectively.

Thomas has become a Welsh sporting hero after his triumph across the Channel and will have plenty of support back home which makes 3/1 a tempting price.

Lewis Hamilton to win @ 8/1 – BET NOW

F1 2018 World Champion and previous victor of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year trophy, Lewis Hamilton is found at 8/1 to add a second win to his cabinet this year capping off another successful season for the Mercedes driver.

After what appeared to be a strong challenge from Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel half-way through the Formula One season, turned out to be a stroll in the park for Hamilton who completed dominated the second half of the calendar.

A fifth Formula One title would normally make a contender a big front runner, but Hamilton could be a victim of his own success. The 33-year-old has won four out of this last five F1 Championship in a sport he has dominated in recent years.

In a year with plenty of strong sporting narratives, Lewis Hamilton’s 8/1 could see you win big money but with the likes of Thomas and Kane creating historic moments, it could be another year whereby Hamilton misses out on the crown.

Greatest Sporting Moment of the Year

England Penalty Shootout v Colombia @ 8/11 – BET NOW

The newest addition to the BBC SPOTY cannon is the Greatest Sporting Moment of the Year; an exciting category that allows us to relive some of the best moments of the year.

Leading the BBC Sports Personality of the Year odds is England’s penalty-shoot out win against Colombia in this summer’s World Cup. Understandably, Eric Dier’s historic winning penalty will be etched in the memories of the public forever and is odds-on to win with the bookies.

Tyson Fury’s unbelievable comeback against Deontay Wilder just the other week is second favourite in a moment that defied human nature. Fury standing up after Deontay Wilder saw ‘his eyes roll back into his head’ will go down in boxing folklore and at 3/1 could potentially upset the England team, but history will side with the England World Cup team in this category.

Other nominees and rank outsiders are England’s Netball team who won Commonwealth Gold against Australia for the first time in the final second of the match, Alastair Cook’s century in his final England cricket match and Tiger Woods’ first win in five year following a number of setbacks.

World Sports Star of the Year

Simone Biles to win @ 5/6 – BET NOW

The third award on our site is the newly renamed World Sports Star of the Year and with four nominees, there is one clear standout in the SPOTY odds.

Gymnast Simone Biles returning after two years out of the sport to dominate on her return is one of the stories of the year.

The 21-year old equalled Svetlana Khorkina’s women’s record of 20 career World Championship medals this year while also winning a record 14 World Championship gold medals in Doha. All this was achieved when the American was in hospital just 24 hours before the competition with kidney stones.

Biles also become the first gymnast in three decades to win a medal in all six women’s event in the same championship.

Franscesco Molinari to win @ 5/2 - BET NOW

This category is always interesting and SPOTY Betting on the Italian golfing superstar, Francesco Molinari will be popular. Not only did the 35-year-old break the American stranglehold on the majors with a superb victory in the Open Championship at Carnoustie, he also won five points out of five points to help Europe regain the Ryder Cup.

His partnership with England’s Tommy Fleetwood was christened ‘Moliwood’ and the duo achieved cult status at Le Golf National, taking on all-comers with aplomb as the US were sent packing with their tails between their legs. Add to that the fact that Molinari is a likable man, Molinari would could be a dark-horse in this category.
