Denis Shapovalov sprung a major surprise when defeating Alexander Zverev in straight sets to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals, but the Canadian must raise his standards again if he is to upset legendary Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

Nadal has breezed into the last eight in Melbourne, dropping his only set in round three against Karen Khachanov, and will be hoping to capitalise with world number one Novak Djokovic absent and German third seed Zverev having crashed out.

This is the Mallorcan’s toughest test yet down under but Shapovalov dropped sets in wins over Laslo Djere and Reilly Opelka and was taken the distance by Soonwoo Kwon, so perhaps was flattered by his margin of victory over last-16 victim Zverev.

Nadal is locked level on 20 Grand Slam titles with Djokovic and Roger Federer, and although he hasn’t claimed Australian Open silverware since 2009, will be well aware of how big of an opportunity this is. He is the highest ranked player remaining in the top half of the men's singles draw.

Denis Shapovalov vs Rafael Nadal Betting Odds

Nadal has lost in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in each of the last two years but is 4/11 to overcome that obstacle with victory over Shapovalov.

The Canadian is 11/5 to reproduce his heroics of the last round and land the upset and is 2/5 to get a set on the board.

The 35-year-old Spaniard has won three of his four Australian Open assignments in straight sets and is 7/4 to do so again, while it is 11/4 that he wins in four and 5/1 that he prevails in an epic final set.

Nadal is 23/10 to go on and lift the title, whereas Shapovalov is still available at 18/1 for a maiden Grand Slam crown.

This will be the fifth competitive meeting between these two players but it will be their first encounter to take place in a Grand Slam competition.

It should come as no surprise to see Nadal leading their personal series 3-1, although two of those victories came on his beloved clay and the other happened in the Davis Cup two years ago.

Saying that, Shapovalov’s win came way back when he was a teenager in 2017 and that match took place in Montreal, which meant the Canadian had the benefit of home advantage.

Rafael Nadal to win 3-1 - BET NOW

Time is running out for 35-year-old Nadal to add to his illustrious haul of 20 Grand Slam successes but the sixth seed can keep his Australian Open title hopes alive with victory over Shapovalov.

Nadal has won the Melbourne major only once - way back in 2009 - and he has been a quarter-final casualty in seven of his 16 visits down under.

However, Nadal has not had to work very hard to book his place in the last eight with him dropping only one set across his four wins.

And while the Spaniard should expect a stern test of his title credentials from Shapovalov, it is still an obstacle he can pass with flying colours.

Nadal needed four sets to see off Russian 30th seed Karen Khachanov in the third round and edged an epic 28-minute first-set tie-break against Adrian Mannarino in the last round.

That offers some hope for Shapovalov, who is on a seven-game winning streak and is appearing in his third Grand Slam quarter-final, although a set may be the best the 22-year-old Canadian can hope for.
