Between 2010 and 2016, Andy Murray reached the final of the Australian Open on five occasions but never managed to lift the trophy in Melbourne.

And although it is highly unlikely he will go the distance this year, he will at least feel confident of winning his first-round encounter with Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia.

The pair played one another on Wednesday and square up again on day two of the first Grand Slam of the season.

As mentioned, these players have already met this month in the Sydney International with Murray winning 6-7 7-6 6-3 and that was only their second ever meeting on the ATP Tour.

The other came only last year in the first round at Wimbledon, where Murray won 6-4 6-3 5-7 6-3 in a battle which lasted more than three and a half hours. 

Murray then defeated German Oscar Otte in his second match before crashing out against Canadian Denis Shapovalov in the subsequent round.

The fact Murray has made it to the final five times - and given he has a US Open title to his name - suggests he can be dangerous on hard courts and he looks a value bet to win this one, even at odds-on.

The Scotsman beat Basilashvili last week on his way to the final of the Sydney International and that was his first ATP final appearance since his victory in the European Open nearly three years ago.

His preparations have gone pretty well but the same cannot be said for his Georgian counterpart, who is struggling to emulate the form he showed in 2021.

At the start of this year, Basilashvili disappointed in the ATP Cup, losing his first match against Diego Schwartzman and managing to win only three sets in that clash before withdrawing from his meeting with Stefanos Tsitsipas, having been 4-1 down in the first set.

He then lost his one and only match in Sydney and the same went for his final tournament of 2021 - the Paris Masters.

His results are sure to improve soon enough but he looks unlikely to match his best ever performance in the Australian Open by reaching the third round. Back him to crash out against Murray.

Although Murray looks a pretty solid bet to win this one, he may not have things all his own way and a bet on the three-time Grand Slam winner to prevail 3-1 could be worthwhile.

Murray faced resistance and dropped sets in both of his significant wins in Sydney over Basilashvili and fourth seed Reilly Opelka and their only other meeting in a Grand Slam went to four sets, with Basilashvili claiming 17 games in that clash at Wimbledon.
