For the first time since 2016 there will be a fresh face lifting the French Open title after Rafael Nadal’s hopes of landing a fifth consecutive crown were ended in the semi-finals by old rival Novak Djokovic.

Nadal has ruled Roland Garros in 13 of the last 16 years and during that spell of dominance only three men have been able to taste French Open glory.

One of those is Djokovic, who defeated Andy Murray in the 2016 final, and the Super serb is a warm order at 3/10 to get the better of Grand Slam final debutant Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The world number one is seeking a 19th Grand Slam crown, which will put him just one behind Roger Federer and Nadal, while Greek 22-year-old Tsitsipas is 3/1 for a first Major title.

Djokovic has the experience edge over Tsitsipas, who is featuring in his first Grand Slam title decider, but the Serb has been beaten in four of his five Roland Garros finals and there are reasons to oppose him again with the up-and-coming Greek star.

Djokovic was superb in Saturday’s four-set success over the all-conquering Nadal, but it is a quick turnaround following such an intense match that lasted four hours and 13 minutes.

Given the 34-year-old also needed four sets to see off Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals and had previously gone the distance against Lorenzo Musetti, he is far from invincible.

Djokovic has won 18 Major titles but only one of them has come in Paris, so he is evidently a more daunting proposition when armed with a hard court or grass.

And although Tsitsipas came through a thrilling five-setter of his own against Alexander Zverev in his semi-final clash, he showed great composure to get the job done having relinquished a two-set lead.

The 22-year-old’s body should have fewer problems recovering from that and previously recorded straight-set wins over world number two Daniil Medvedev and Pablo Carreno Busta, which looks strong form.

The prices appear to underestimate the chances of rising star Tsitsipas, who has lost only three of his 25 matches during the clay-court season.

This will be the eighth competitive meeting between this pair and it is no surprise to see Djokovic holding a 5-2 lead.

But recent evidence suggests Tsitsipas is bridging the gap and their recent duels on clay indicate a lengthy contest could be in store.

These two locked horns in the semi-final of the French Open last year, with Djokovic prevailing in an epic five-setter.

That contest featured 46 games and quotes of 10/11 about this latest rivalry lasting over 35.5 games looks well worth capitalising on.

The pair also clashed in the quarter-finals in Rome last month, with the Serb coming out on top 4-6 7-5 7-5. But Tsitsipas had led by a set and a break when play was forced to stop, before Djokovic reeled him in when things reconvened.

This is unlikely to be as straightforward for Djokovic as the bookmakers are anticipating with Tsitsipas more than capable of taking this contest the distance.
