After all has been said and done about the opening week matchups, we move to week two which is sure to hold more surprises in store. One team who was involved in a 71 point thriller was Atlanta who got the best of a stubborn New Orleans side to win cosily in OT with a field goal. They take on Cincinnati who beat Baltimore in their seasonal opener and Atlanta should be a tough nut to crack, writes Anthony Dunkley...
Cincinnati v Atlanta (Sunday, 18:00)
Anthony Dunkley’s Verdict: ATLANTA +5 HANDICAP @ 49/50 – BET NOW
While I completely respect that Cincinnati will be hard to beat at home and they won on the road last time at Baltimore, I’m willing to take a chance that Atlanta will be buoyed by their epic win over the Saints last time and can keep this close.
Many weren’t as impressed as I was with the Falcons display against the Saints. They conceded 34 points and both defenses in the game looked pretty shaky, combining for just one sack in a game that went into overtime. However, while this is worrying for the Falcons, it’s not nearly as much as it would be if their offense wasn’t firing. They lost 12 last season because of injuries and an inability to take their chances. They proved their doubters wrong last Sunday.
New Orleans’ defense is ranked fourth in the league. Conversely, Baltimore (who the Bengals beat last Sunday) looked abysmal and Cincinnati only managed 23 points against them, five of which were field goals.
Cincinnati are around 4/9 to win this game and I have no doubt they’ll be better in this game than they were last week. But I like the direction Atlanta is heading in and with a five point head start, they are a tentative pick to see whether they’ll have enough in the locker to repeat their heroics. Here’s hoping they’ve turned a new leaf over and they’ll put up a fight.
Cincinnati v Atlanta Head To Heads: The Bengals haven’t beaten the Falcons in their last three games, the last game in 2010 ending 39-32 to the latter. In each of those games, they covered the spread with no trouble.
NFL Betting: After a gutsy display last weekend, Atlanta remain unchanged at 40/1 (60 on the exchanges) for Super Bowl glory and 11/4 for the NFC South, vying for favourites with New Orleans. Cincinnati are 8/5 favourites for the AFC North and are a general 10/1 third favourite behind Denver and New England for the AFC Conference.
