The Indian Premier League is in full swing, but without some key franchises after a spot betting scandal left two sides suspended. The ninth IPL season still features many world beaters though, and the draft is always one of the most interesting parts of the spectacle.
Money is no object to some of the owners of the franchises, but they need to balance their books according to new rules put in place. That hasn’t stopped many players making shed loads of money this season, however.
Ross Casey counts down the top 5 IPL Earners for the 2016 season!
#1 - Virat Kohli: Royal Challengers, Salary ($2.26 Million)
Virat Kohli had an excellent 2015 and picked up big scores in many internationals. The 27 year-old Indian Test captain was quoted as saying he wanted to break some records this year – how’s that for confidence? He tops this list… so a good start to your goals Virat!
At the time of writing he is sixth top scorer in the whole tournament with a ridiculous 154 runs scored from just two innings! Nothing like value for money… well played Sir! The Royal Challengers captain is certainly leading by example!
#2 - Shane Watson: Royal Challengers, Salary ($1.85 Million)
The Royal Challengers aren’t messing about are they? Not content with splashing more than $2 million dollars on Virat Kohli, they have also paid out a huge $1.85 million on Australian hero Shane Watson!
A winner of the 2015 World Cup and one of the highest earners in the Pakistan Super League, Watson is an excellent choice for this form of the game. As of writing, he is 25th in the golden cap list this season and has taken the joint third most wickets In the IPL.

#3 - MS Dhoni: Team Pune, Salary ($1.8 Million)
After the suspension of Chennai Super Kings, Team Pune have picked up the absolute legend of Indian cricket that is MS Dhoni. The former six time highest earner in the IPL has a current strike rate of 191.66 – not bad, right?
#4 - Shikhar Dhawan: Hyderabad Sunrisers, Salary ($1.8 Million)
The Indian opening batsmen was hot property in the draft this season, but it was the Hyderabad Sunrisers who managed to bag him, with a huge $1.8m dollars paid for his services. Unfortunately for his team, he has shown very poor form with a current high score of eight. Ouch!
#5 - Rohit Sharma: Mumbai Indians, Salary ($1.7 Million)
Rohit Sharma is a real game changer with his hard hitting ability capable of destroying bowling attacks of the best sides in the world. The Mumbai Indians re-signed him for the 2016 IPL season for a fee of $1.7m dollars, making him the fifth and final player in our countdown of the top 5 IPL earners.
He has repaid them so far, however. Rohit is the ninth highest scoring batsman in the competition this season, including an impressive 84 not out.
