Twenty20 World Cup Tips

The Twenty20 Cricket World Cup is upon with the world’s best teams in the shortest form of the game converging on Bangladesh for the three week tournament. There have been four previous tournaments and four different winners so the trophy is up for grabs and Tom Powell has picked out his best bet to win the tournament…

Tom’s recommended tip:

Sri Lanka To Win @ 7/1 – BET NOW

Sri Lanka have agonisingly fallen at the final hurdle in two of the four Twenty20 World Cups so far but they look good value to finally get a tournament win under their belt.

Their form in the shortest form of the game is decent as they sit top of the T20 rankings going into the tournament well clear of second place India who are favourites in the outright betting at 5/1. Their strength is arguably in their bowling attack which will flourish on the Bangladesh pitches which resemble Sri Lankan conditions. Ajantha Mendis and Nuwan Kulasekara are amongst the top 10 in the T20 bowler rankings with those two spearheading a bowling attack possessing a dangerous mix of spin and pace.

Both groups possess difficult teams but Sri Lanka have managed to avoid taking on a fellow Asian side who have to be considered favourites on matches played in the sub-continent. South Africa (third in the T20 rankings) will be Sri Lanka’s toughest match first up before more straightforward matches against England, New Zealand and the Group B qualifier. India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka could all reach the semis but I think Sri Lanka possess the experience and quality to go all the way.

Tom’s view on the other contenders…

India (5/1): Group 2 looks a tough one with Pakistan, Australia and holders West Indies joining India in that group and so 5/1 looks a touch too short.

Australia (9/2): Like India they face a struggle to even advance from the group and aren’t suited to the conditions.

South Africa (13/2): Perennial under-achievers in big tournaments but I think they’ll advance to the last four but fall short of winning the title.

West Indies (8/1): They head to Bangladesh as holders but are missing some big name players and are drawn in a tough group so I expect them to fly home early.

Pakistan (7/1): I think they have a decent chance of winning but they can be hit and miss and I’d like a slightly bigger price before backing them.

New Zealand (10/1): Don’t rule out the Black Caps who have the best T20 batsman in Brendon McCullum along with a host of other big hitters. The bowling attacking looks a bit weak though.

England (12/1): Don’t have a good enough bowling attack and although they have a few destructive batsmen the all-round squad isn’t strong enough.

Bangaldesh (40/1): The obvious plus for them is they are the hosts but they simply aren’t good enough to go all the way plus they have to qualify first.
