The Carabao Cup semifinal second leg between Newcastle United and Southampton will take place on Tuesday night at St James’ Park. The Magpies go into the second leg of the semifinal against Southampton leading 1-0. Joelinton’s second-half goal in the first leg sent the Magpies to the win.

Newcastle are now just 90 minutes away from a first cup final since 1999 when they were beaten in the FA Cup by Manchester United. The revolution taking place on the Tyne has come quickly, as few fans would have expected Newcastle to battle for a trophy in the first full season after the takeover.

Southampton are coming off a 2-1 FA Cup fourth-round win over Blackpool at the weekend. The win ended a two-game losing streak. Manager Nathan Jones has Southampton playing well in cup competitions although he hasn’t cracked the Premier League problems. Jones is hoping the Saints can turn around the semifinal against one of the best defences in England this season.

Sportsbooks have Newcastle United as the favourites to win the fixture at odds of 4/9. Southampton are the underdog at odds of 15/2. Bookmakers have the teams at odds of 7/2 to draw at full-time.

Newcastle United vs Southampton Team News

Anthony Gordon officially signed for Newcastle over the weekend for £40 million plus add-ons. Newcastle were looking for another attacking player that can play in wide positions. Howe will hope to develop Gordon into the player Everton fans expected him to become on Merseyside. The forward could make his Newcastle debut on Tuesday.

Howe has no fresh injuries from the first leg but is still missing the trio of Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Targett, and Emil Krath. Unlike Southampton, Newcastle did not play at the weekend due to being eliminated from the FA Cup in the third round by Sheffield Wednesday.

Jones has four players in the treatment room at St Mary’s Stadium and are unlikely to make the trip to the northeast. Valentino Livramento is ruled out with a muscle injury. Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has an ankle injury and is a doubt to make the squad. Juan Larios has a groin problem and won’t play. Moussa Djenepo is recovering from a head injury and is set to miss the trip to Newcastle.

Che Adams leads Southampton in goals with eight this season. Midfielder James Ward-Prowse has chipped in with seven in all competitions. The Saints scored 29 goals in their opening 27 fixtures in all competitions this season.

Newcastle United vs Southampton H2H

Joelinton’s 73rd-minute goal in the first leg of the semifinal gave Newcastle United a slender edge going into the second leg at St James’ Park. Ten yellow cards were handed out to players in the fixture. Southampton’s Duje Caleta-Car received a second yellow card on 86 minutes, resulting in his sending off. Caleta-Car won’t play on Tuesday night at St James’ Park.

Tuesday’s semifinal second leg is the third match of the season between the two clubs. Newcastle United won both previous fixtures, which were played at St Mary’s Stadium. Before winning 1-0 in the first leg of the EFL Cup semifinal, Newcastle went to Southampton and won 4-1 in the Premier League.

Newcastle are on a three-game winning streak against Southampton in all competitions. All three games were played at St Mary’s Stadium. The Magpies are unbeaten in five straight games versus Southampton.

Twenty-two straight Newcastle games went into halftime with both teams not scoring goals. Both matches played this season between Newcastle and Southampton finished the first half with both teams not scoring.

Newcastle United vs Southampton Betting Tips

Based on Newcastle’s strong defensive record, the opening half should end with both teams not scoring goals. Twenty-two straight Newcastle games in all competitions went into halftime with both teams not scoring goals. Bookmakers expect both teams not to score in the first half, however, with odds at 1/8.

Newcastle do not score a lot of first half goals. However, the odds on Newcastle winning the first half are at 20/21. The last seven Newcastle matches in all competitions went into halftime tied at nil-nil. The teams are at odds of 13/10 to finish the first half drawing. Meanwhile, odds on a correct halftime score of 0-0 are at 7/4.

Major bookmakers are offering odds of a halftime draw, and a full-time Newcastle win at odds of 3/1. It is an attractive wager, as Newcastle saw three of their last four games, including the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal, finish in a halftime draw, a full-time win.

Two of Newcastle’s last three games in all competitions finished as 1-0 wins. The best betting odds on a 1-0 win are at 11/2. Based on trends and form, Newcastle should keep this a low-scoring game with Southampton struggling to find the back of the net.

Newcastle United vs Southampton Prediction

Southampton’s EFL Cup run is about to come to an end courtesy of Newcastle United. The Magpies are the real deal and could lift a trophy this season. On Tuesday night, Howe should lead Newcastle to a 14th win in 27 games in all competitions. Southampton had some chances in a chaotic first leg at St Mary’s. This time around, there may be less chaos as Newcastle settle down in front of their home fans on Tyneside.

The first half should again finish with both teams not scoring. Southampton have scored 13 goals in 12 matches on the road this season, winning five games and losing 13 times. Our betting tips prediction is for Newcastle to win at home in front of tremendous support hungry for a cup trophy.

Southampton just aren’t good enough, and they need to focus on retaining their place in the Premier League. Newcastle will pick up the win and progress to a first cup final in over 20 years. Waiting for them at Wembley is likely to be Manchester United in a rematch of the 1999 FA Cup Final. A win for Newcastle will make it three in a row this season over the Saints.
