About FC Barcelona
Barcelona Football Club were founded in 1899 by Joan Gamper when he placed a newspaper advert in a local paper to attract other football enthusiasts. It didn’t take long for Gamper to find 11 other football-mad individuals and the rest is history. The behemoth of modern-day Barcelona Football Club were born out of one simple newspaper advert.
Success wasn’t far away for Barcelona as they won the Copa del Rey – a tournament that the Blaugrana regularly win – eight times between 1902 and 1928. Success continued over the decades, but the Barcelona fans know and love today didn’t really take shape until the 1970s.
In 1973, Barcelona signed Ajax superstar Johan Cruyff. His influence on the team showed immediately as Barcelona won the La Liga title in 1974 – their first in a decade. Cruyff would have several successful years at the club, but it wouldn’t be until his return as manager in the 1990s that total football would be at Barcelona to stay.
Even before Cruyff returned in 1988 as manager, he influenced the club to start La Masia Academy to develop future players. The academy took its inspiration from Ajax’s youth academy, a place Cruyff new a lot about having spent so many years in Amsterdam. In the late 1980s, Cruyff assembled a “dream team” which won four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey, a Cup Winners' Cup, and Barcelona’s first-ever European Cup trophy.
Cruyff’s fingerprints were all over the team’s tiki-taka style that came about years later under Pep Guardiola. The manager helped develop a style of play that led to further success with Lionel Messi, Xaxi, Andres Iniesta, and other greats.
