About Real Madrid
The capital club were founded in 1902 under the name Madrid Football Club. It took nearly two decades for the club to receive the “real” tag. In 1920, King Alfonso XIII bestowed the club with the “real” title, which translate to "royal" in English. Even in the club’s early years, they found success winning four consecutive Copa del Rey trophies between 1905 to 1908.
Real Madrid’s major successes didn’t come until after World War II. Santiago Bernabeu took control of the club as president where under his watch, Real Madrid become more successful than ever. One of his major accomplishments was overseeing the construction of a new stadium, which bears Bernabeu’s name today. In addition to building a new stadium, Bernabeu put together a dream team on the pitch. The likes of Alfredo Di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas, and Francisco Gento played for the team through the 1960s, helping them win La Liga and Copa del Rey trophies.
While fans clamour for Los Blancos to win La Liga each season, the club’s real aim is to win the Champions League. They have won the trophy a record 13 times with the most recent successes coming in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018. Real Madrid won the initial five UEFA European Cups to set the foundation for their love of the competition.
The 2000s didn’t see many trophies for the club, but star players arrived in droves. The Galacticos-era saw the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, David Beckham, and other star players of the period grace the Bernabeu.
