The Open Championship Odds Preview

- 16:07, 12th July 2017

The third major of the year is fast approaching, The Open Championship. The tournament starts on Thursday 20th July at the Royal Birkdale Golf Course and comes to a conclusion on Sunday 23rd July. In this preview I will be going through the top 5 players in the betting and why the bookmakers have them as the most likely winners for this prestigious tournament.

The Open Championship Odds

World Number 1, Dustin Johnson comes into this tournament as the likely favourite and although he’s missed the cut in his last two tournaments he will surely prove popular with punters and should be the one to beat. Dustin has accumulated over $6.35million in prize money so far this season, winning three tournaments and finishing in the top 10 in seven of his thirteen events (six of those inside the top 3).

He was last seen at the US Open where he performed well below form but was potentially still recovering from that unfortunate injury on the eve of the US Masters. The month off is obviously in preparation for this tournament and I’m fully expecting/hoping to see DJ back at his best here.

Despite all of his well-documented problems this season Rory Mcilroy still sits 4th in the world rankings and is favourite to win this tournament with a few bookmakers. He had a lot of trouble with his back early in the season but fought through the injury to finish in the top 10 in his first five tournaments.

After his 7th place finish in the Masters he took a month off to give his back the rest it needed and at the same time made a $100m deal with TaylorMade, a decision that benefited his bank balance but has yet to prove successful on the course. Since switching to his new clubs Mcilroy has played four events with his best performance being a 17th place finish at the Travelers Championship, 35th at the Players Championship and two missed cuts at the US Open and The Irish Open in which he hosted.

It’s surely just a matter of time until we start seeing him back to his best form, will the Open Championship be the turning point? We shall see!

A player that comes into this tournament in great form is Jordan Spieth. His latest win (via a playoff) at the Travelers Championship was exactly what he needed to give him the confidence ahead of a tough week at Royal Birkdale. Jordan has been a consistent performer this season with two wins, six top 10 finishes and ten top 20 finishes; he’s accumulated just under $5million in prize money.

Spieth is well known for his great touch on and around the putting surface and if he’s able to find the fairways with his tee shots there’s a great chance he will prove very tough to beat here.

When it comes to recent form and ‘one to follow’ there’s only one player that punters will be backing, Spain’s Jon Rahm. His latest win at Portstewart Golf Club (Irish Open) was up there with one of the best performances you’ll see this season. He was never out of the top 5 on the first three days and then absolutely blew the field away on the final day, eventually winning by 6 strokes at -24.

Royal Birkdale is a course that I feel is well suited to Rahm’s game and if he can get off to a good start and stay calm throughout his rounds I think he has a great chance of making it back to back wins and his first win in a major.

The last player sneaking into the top 5 in the betting is this year’s Masters Champion, Sergio Garcia. His success at Augusta back in April was a long time coming and a win that was very well deserved. Sergio has always performed well at the Majors and with a win now under his belt there would be no surprise if he was to put in another winning performance here.

The Spaniard has made every cut in the eleven events his played this season and although his best performance (Other than his Masters win) was only a 9th place finish at the WGC HSBC Champions, he has never been too far down the leaderboard. If he has a good week on and around the greens I’m sure we’ll be seeing him towards the top of the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon/evening.
