“We had a superb day at Newmarket yesterday with two from three tips landing an 11/4 NAP and Mix And Mingle at 7/1! Contrapposto ran a decent race at 50/1 in the Craven placing fourth, but the winner Eminent was superb and could be a genuine challenger to Churchill in the Guineas in a few weeks.” JJ

2.30 Newbury

There are a couple in competitive handicaps at Newbury today, but I’m a sucker for these long distance races so I’ll start here. Alan King enters two here and it surprises me that Ryan Moore has decided to ride Rainbow Dreamer, although he has been running well in top juvenile hurdle races this season. However I still prefer the other one OCEANE (11/2), who has Fergus Sweeney on board. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that his last three poor starts can be blamed on the tracks. The last two were on the all-weather, a surface he had never run on previous, and the uniqueness of Newmarket may have caught him out in the Cesarewitch Trial. However, before that he was an excellent winner of a valuable two mile handicap at York off of only five pounds lower and he was was unlucky at Goodwood in the race won by Star Rider when staying on strongly after being stuck behind a wall of horses.

3.50 Ayr

Day one of the Scottish Grand National meeting at Ayr starts on Friday with the Hillhouse Quarry Handicap Chase acting as the feature. Two Taffs is your 5/2 favourite after an impressive third at Cheltenham in the Close Brothers, but the one I like is KATGARY (8/1) for the much smaller Pauline Robson stable. The seven-year-old seems to have turned the corner on his last two starts and can now hopefully kick on and display some of that potential he showed when second in the Fred Winter back in 2014. There were many things against him on his first run of this jumps season last time, including the soft ground, but he still managed to get within a length of San Benedito, who won his next two including a grade one at Aintree last time. What’s more, he was actually squeezed for room inside the final furlong by the winner that day and may have got even closer but for the interference. He should be much more at home on this sounder surface and can improve for his first run this season.
