Australian Open No 5 seed Andrey Rublev will play No 4 seed Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam event on Wednesday. Djokovic is the bookmaker’s favourite to win the Grand Slam and lift his ninth Australian Open title. The Serbian has won 92 tournament titles in his career, which is the fourth-most in the Open Era.

Rublev is aiming to topple the tournament favourite in Melbourne. The Russian has never won a Grand Slam tournament despite being on the cusp of tennis stardom. Rublev is a 12-time tournament winner, but he has never progressed past the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. Could this season’s Aussie Open once again see Rublev eliminated in the last eight?

Rublev is coming off an incredible round-four match versus No 9 seed Holger Rune. The Russian twice saved a match point to earn a 3-2 win in a back-and-forth match.

Djokovic has been dominant throughout the Australian Open. He has lost a set on just one occasion in the tournament, and that defeat came against Enzo Couacaud in round No 2. For the most part, Djokovic has been a force in the Grand Slam, as he attempts to win a ninth Aussie Open.

Andrey Rublev vs Novak Djokovic Betting Odds

Djokovic’s odds to win the Australian Open 2023 have been slashed to 2/5. Bookmakers are of strong belief the Serbian will lift the tournament’s trophy once more. Rublev is at the best betting odds of 11/1 to win the Australian Open. Only Stefanos Tsitsipas (7/2) and Karen Khachanov (8/1) have better odds to win the tournament than Rublev.

Rublev is a heavy underdog going into Wednesday’s match at Melbourne Park. The Russian is at betting odds of 5/1 to defeat Djokovic and progress to the semifinals of the Grand Slam. Rublev started the tournament with a straight-set win over Dominic Thiem. A 3-1 win over Emil Ruusuvuori followed before a 3-0 victory over Daniel Evans. Rublev went to five sets with Rune in an epic showdown in the fourth round to reach the quarterfinals against Djokovic.

It wasn’t until the third round that Djokovic played a seeded opponent. There, he defeated No 27 seed Grigor Dimitrov 3-0. Djokovic then defeated No 22 seed Alex de Minaur. The only knock on Djokovic headed into the quarterfinals is the lack of top-quality players he has played in the opening rounds of the competition. There is no doubt Djokovic can play with stronger opponents.

Djokovic is evens to defeat Rublev 3-0, while the odds on a 3-1 win are at 11/5. Rublev is a serious underdog for the match. The odds for Rublev to win 3-2 are 11/1. Rublev does own one career win against Djokovic. The victory was in 2022 in three sets, as Rublev was on his game that day. He will need to be on his game once more to defeat a legend.

Andrey Rublev vs Novak Djokovic H2H

Rublev and Djokovic have played three times in their careers. Djokovic has a record of two wins and one loss against Rublev in their three prior meetings. The tennis players first played in 2021 at the Nitto ATP Finals in Italy, with Djokovic winning the round-robin contest 6-3 and 6-2.

The pair met again in 2022 at the Serbia Open. Played on Clay, Rublev won the tournament’s final over Djokovic 6-2, 6-7, and 6-0. The final set shows just how strong of a player Rublev can be on his day. Rublev and Djokovic played one more time in 2022, with the Serbian picking up a victory in the Nitto ATP Finals. Djokovic won the match 6-4 and 6-1.

Rublev did not start the 2023 season well, losing two matches in pre-Australian Open fixtures. He went into the Grand Slam without a win, which was a surprise for the world No 6 ranked player. Rublev lost in the Adelaide International 1 to Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 3-6, and 4-6. The Russian then played the Adelaide International 2, losing in the round of 16 to Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Djokovic is the world’s No 5 ranked player but could move up significantly by winning the Australian Open. The Serbian started the year strong by winning the Adelaide International 1, as he defeated Constant Lestienne, Quentin Halys, Denis Shapovalov, Daniil Medvedev, and Sebastian Korda.

Andrey Rublev vs Novak Djokovic Betting Tips

Djokovic is a man on a mission. He was deported from Australia in 2022 and was not allowed to participate in the competition. The Serbian was a pariah last season with many tournament organisers not wanting him to play their events due to COVID-19 protocols. Djokovic has a chip on his shoulder from the issues he experienced a year ago, which is fuelling him.

Rublev has never progressed past the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event. He is a strong player, but there is a ceiling to Rublev’s play at Grand Slam events. He didn’t start the season well in Adelaide, losing twice without collecting a victory. Rublev has a record of 42-20 in Grand Slam events. He plays well on hardcourt with a record of 177-99. However, the Russian is taking on the master of the Australian Open.

Djokovic has a winning percentage of 83% thanks to a record of 1036-206. He has 66 titles on hardcourt and a win percentage of 84.5%. There is a reason the bookmakers are backing Djokovic to win the match and the Australian Open as a whole.

Rublev should make Djokovic work for the win. The match is unlikely to be a straight-set win for the eight-time Aussie champion. Rublev’s best strategy would be to come out and attack Djokovic to take him out of his game early. Yes, Djokovic is a tennis great and rebound, but Rublev cannot back off and let the Serbian dictate the pace and play of the match.

Djokovic should pick up the quarterfinal win and progress to the semifinals. The match could go four sets, which is priced at odds of 15/8. Djokovic to win 3-1 is at the best odds of 11/5. Our betting tips prediction is for Djokovic to see off Rublev 3-1.
