Former world No. 1 Andy Murray is through to the third round of the US Open. The British tennis star upset No. 24 seed Francisco Cerundolo to start the tournament with a 3-0 win. Murray came back in the second round to defeat American Emilio Nava in four sets.

Murray dropped the first set 5-7 before storming to the win thanks to three consecutive set wins 6-3, 6-1, 6-0. Now. Murray is preparing to play Italian Matteo Berrettini in major clash at the US Open.

The Italian is the world’s No. 14 ranked player. He has had a strong season with a record of 23-9 to go along with two ATP Tour event titles. Earlier this year, Berrettini achieved his highest-ever ranking of No. 6 in the world.

Murray is ranked No. 51 on the ATP Tour. He has had an up and down season with a 22-14 record and no event wins. However, Murray may be enjoying the hard courts of the US Open, which provide a different feel to the clay of Roland Garros and grass of Wimbledon. The hard surface may help Murray play following all the injuries in recent seasons.

Andy Murray vs Matteo Berrettini Betting Odds

There are a few great stories brewing at this year’s US Open. One is the play of Serena Williams as she attempts to win the US Open before retiring. Murray is another feel-good story. The British player is trying to come back after all of the injuries and to win another Grand Slam tournament.

Murray has only won three Grand Slams previously (Wimbledon twice and the US Open). The British tennis icon hasn’t won a major tournament since the 2016 Wimbledon. His last US Open win was in 2012.

If Murray can go deep in the US Open tournament, it would be a significant story. Bookies are on the fence with Murray at the moment. He is at the best betting odds of 66/1 to win the US Open. Berrettini has given bookies more hope of a win. The Italian is 14/1 to win the US Open. Berrettini has never won a Grand Slam, but he did reach the 2019 US Open semifinals.

Bookies are backing Berrettini to pick up a win against Murray in the third round on Friday. Berrettini is 4/9 to win the match, while Murray is the underdog at 7/4. Both players had to work for their wins in the second round. A bet on the match going four sets is at odds of 13/8. A five-set match is at odds of 11/4.

Meanwhile, Berrettini goes into the match at odds of 8/5 to win and both players to win a set. Murray is 11/4 to win with both players winning a set.

Andy Murray vs Matteo Berrettini H2H

Andy Murray and Matteo Berrettini have played three times previously, and Friday’s match will be their fourth-ever encounter. Berrettini holds the advantage in head-to-head meetings with two wins and one loss versus Murray.

The duo first played in 2019 in Beijing with Murray claiming a 7-6(2), 7-6(7) win. Since then, it has been all Berrettini. Keep in mind that Berrrettini’s wins in 2021 and 2022 would have come during a time of fitness problems for Murray.

In 2021, Berrettini picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win at the Queens Club. Earlier this season in Stuttgart, Berrettini defeated Murray 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. The loss to Berrettini in Stuttgart marked Murray’s second-ever loss in a grass court final in 10 attempts.

It should be noted that Berrettini’s two wins came on grass courts. Murray’s one win against Berrettini was on hard court surface. The hard court could play into Murray’s hands.

Murray hasn’t played well at Grand Slams in 2022. He has a 4-2 record which has improve thanks to two wins at the US Open. Murray has a record of 13-11 on hard courts this season. He is actually worse this season on hard courts than grass or clay.

Berrettini, on the other hand, is 7-1 at Grand Slams this season. Despite the great record, hard courts have not been kind. Berrettini has a record of 10-7 on hard courts. Grass is where Berrettini excels and it was on grass that his two wins against Murray occurred.

Andy Murray vs Matteo Berrettini Prediction

Murray should fancy his chances against Berrettini. The two players are familiar with each other, having played earlier this season. Berrettini holds the advantage over Murray with two wins in three games. Yet, those wins came on grass, a surface Berrettini dominates. Murray’s win was on hard court.

Although Murray is just over .500 on hard courts this season, the same as Berrettini, he should give the Italian a strong game. Murray should be able to push Berrettini and win a set. However, this will be Murray’s third match of the week. At 35 and having suffered numerous injuries in recent seasons, Murray’s boy may not be holding up.

This match should go four sets with Berrettini getting the win in the end. Berrettini is at the best betting odds of 8/5 to win with both players winning a set. Meanwhile, a bet on four sets is priced at 13/8. Murray is good enough to win a set and to put a scare into Berrettini. However, the youth of Berrettini should prevail.

A win for Berrettini would set up a fourth-round match with either Colombian Daniel Galan or Spain’s Davidovich Fokina. Neither of those possible fourth-round opponents are seeded. A win over Murray would also put Berrettini in line to face off with No. 5 seed Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals.
