Cameron Norrie will play Joao Sousa in the second round of the US Open on Thursday. The British tennis star is seeded No. 7 at the US Open and will fancy his chances of eliminated unseeded Portuguese player Sousa.

Norrie reached the second round of the US Open thanks to a 6-0, 7-6, 6-0 win over Benoit Parie. The match had the strange moment of Parie packing up his bag before the match was completed. Now, Norrie will play Sousa, who needed four sets to defeat American MacKenzie McDonald.

Sousa needed four sets to win in the first round before finally downing McDonald. The Portuguese player lost the first set 1-6, but made a strong comeback to win three straight sets 7-6, 7-6, 6-3. McDonald pushed Sousa the entire way before the Portuguese got the upper hand.

Norrie is ranked No. 9 in the world. It is his highest-ever ranking on the ATP Tour. Sousa, on the other hand, is ranked No. 59. His US Open first round win won’t do his rankings any harm.

Sousa, 33, achieved his US Open best in 2015 and 2019 by reaching the quarterfinal round. Norrie’s US Open best was in 2020 when he reached the third round of the event.

Cameron Norrie vs Joao Sousa Betting Odds

Norrie has had a strong 2022 and so far, it was capped off with a run to the semifinals of Wimbledon. Prior to reaching the semifinals of the Championships, Norrie had failed to get past the third round of the other Grand Slam tournaments.

Sousa’s best performance at a Grand Slam was in 2019 when he reached the semifinals at the Australian Open. The Portuguese has had the potential to do big things on the ATP Tour. However, the reality has been inconsistency at the major tournaments.

Ahead of their second-round match on Thursday, Norrie is at the best betting odds of 33/1 to win the US Open men’s tournament. Sousa, on the other hand, is at the best US Open winner odds of 500/1. As you can see, bookies have little faith in Sousa reaching the final. Norrie is on the rise in men’s tennis and is one of those players that could surprise onlookers.

Novak Djokovic’s absence from the US Open means the men’s tournament could be slightly wide open. Djokovic lost the final last year to winner Daniil Medvedev.

Norrie is the heavy favourite to win the match against Sousa. The British player is at the best betting odds of 1/20 to win the match and move onto the third round in New York City. There isn’t a lot of value in a Norrie to win bet. Bettors may want to look at individual set betting for this one.

Sousa is at the best betting odds of 10/1 to shock Norrie. Meanwhile, Norrie is 4/9 to win in three sets or at 3/1 to win 3-1. It took just three sets for Norrie to dispatch Paire in the first round.

Cameron Norrie vs Joao Sousa H2H

ATP world No. 9 Cameron Norrie has faced off with Joao Sousa on two previous occasions. Norrie posted two wins from the two matches and will go into this game feeling confident of a third straight win against Sousa. Sousa’s previous record is one reason he is a major underdog heading into the match on Thursday.

The two players first played in Auckland, New Zealand in 2019 with Norrie claiming a 7-6, 6-4 win. Note that the first meeting between the two players was on hard court, which is excatly what they will play on Thursday at the US Open. The pair’s second match was in 2021 in Portugal. Played on clay, Norrie won 6-1, 6-3.

Norrie has been outstanding this season with a record of 41-19 before playing at the US Open. The British star has lifted two tournament trophies this season, which is half of his career ATP Tour title total. Norrie has really got his career on track this season and a win against Sousa should continue that progress.

Sousa has a losing ATP Tour record this season at a 13-15 mark prior to the US Open. The Portuguese tennis player did claim one event title, which came in Pune, India at an ATP 250 event in January. Sousa’s season record is a perfect example of his inconsistency. He has the potential to win tournaments and reach event finals, but also the ability to lose in qualifying rounds, which has occurred multiple times in 2022.

Cameron Norrie vs Joao Sousa Prediction

Norrie may not have an easy time with Sousa, due to the Portuguese being inconsistent from match to match, but the British player should come out on top in the end. The world No. 9 had a good build-up to the US Open by reaching the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati.

En route to the final in Cincinnati, Norrie defeated top players Holger Rune, Andy Murray, and Carlos Alcaraz, who was ranked No. 4. Yet, Norrie let himself down in the semifinals against world No. 152 ranked Borna Coric, a player Norrie should have defeated easily. Instead, Norrie was beaten in two sets.

Sousa’s build-up to New York City wasn’t great. He lost to Marc-Andrea Huesler in two sets at the ATP Masters 1000 Canada in the first qualifying round. The next tournament saw Sousa bounced by No. 89 ranked Laslo Djere in the second round.

Norrie should be able to put Sousa away in three sets. The world No. 9 is 4/9 to defeat Sousa 3-0. Norrie smashed past Paire in the first set of their opening round match 6-0. Bookies’ best betting odds on a Norrie first set 6-0 win is at 16/1. Keep in mind that Sousa lost his first set to MacKenzie McDonald 1-6 in the first round. The best betting odds on a Norrie 6-1 first set win are at 6/1.

Norrie should have no issue winning this match and our betting tips prediction is for a Norrie 3-0 victory. Sousa’s inconsistencies should continue.
