John Isner pulled off a coup in the second round of Wimbledon by knocking out former tournament winner Andy Murray. Although Murray isn’t the player he once was, Isner’s win is hugely significant as the American moves into the third round of the Wimbledon Championships.

Up next for the No. 20 seed is Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner. The Italian is the No. 10 seed at Wimbledon and heads into round No. 3 with back-to-back four-set wins. Sinner started Wimbledon with a 3-1 win against Stan Wawrinka. It was Sinner’s first ATP Tour grass win. The Italian followed it up with another 3-1 victory, this time against Mikael Ymer.

Sinner is just 20-years-old and is one of the young guns on the ATP Tour. He is 17 years younger than Isner, who is closer to the end of his long career than the beginning. Sinner may be the No. 20 seed at Wimbledon, but the Italian is the world’s No. 13 ranked player.

Isner is the No. 24 ranked player on the ATP Tour. It is a strong ranking for the American. Isner was made to work for his win against Enzo Couacaud in round No. 1. The American claimed a 3-2 win before moving onto defeat Murray 3-1. Isner won the first and second sets before dropping the third. He came back to claim the fourth set and victory over the former Wimbledon champion.

Isner reached the semifinals of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships. Sinner has already achieved his personal best at the All-England Club. Which player will come out on top on Friday?

Jannik Sinner vs John Isner Betting Odds

odds

Despite Isner having the experience and more wins on grass on the ATP Tour, bookies are backing Sinner to win the match. The Italian is at the best betting odds of 8/15 to post a victory over Isner on Friday. Isner is at the best betting odds of 6/4. Although Sinner is the favourite, the odds aren’t wildly distorted like in some other matches.

Isner went to five and four sets in the opening two rounds respectively. Bookies’ best betting odds on the match to go four sets are at 13/8. The best betting odds on a five-set match are at 5/2. Sinner went four sets in both opening matches of the Championships. A straight set win for either player seems unlikely.

The American tennis player has a 2022 record of 15-12. It is nothing great and the two wins at Wimbledon have really helped that total. Although Isner has not won an ATP Tour event this season, he reached the finals at the Houston ATP 250 tournament.

Sinner has been excellent with a record of 27-8 this season. Like Isner, Sinner has not won an event. He has tallied more than $1.6 million in prize money. Sinner did not have a good warm-up for Wimbledon. He played on grass at Eastbourne, losing in the round of 16 to No. 35 ranked Tommy Paul. Sinner only picked up his first tour-level grass win in the first round of Wimbledon. The Italian could struggle on the surface.

Bookies’ best betting odds on a Sinner 3-0 win are at 12/5. He has been pushed to four sets in both games at the tournament, so it may be more likely that this match ends in a Sinner 3-1 win. Bookies’ best odds on a Sinner 3-1 win are at 10/3.

Jannik Sinner vs John Isner H2H

Friday’s match at Wimbledon will be the fourth all time between Jannik Sinner and John Isner. Sinner holds a 2-1 record against Isner, but there is a caveat to that record. The two first met in 2021 at the Cincinnati ATP 1000 event. The outdoor hard surface match was won by Isner 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-4. The American showed his ability to come from behind in the fixture.

Their second encounter came just weeks later at the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells tournament. This time, Sinner was the winner in the round of 32 clash. Sinner’s victory came due to a walkover as Isner suffered an injury.

The third meeting between Sinner and Isner was at the Davis Cup Finals in 2021. Sinner eased by Isner 6-2, 6-0 in the cup match. Take away Sinner’s win courtesy of Isner’s walkover and these two have been evenly matched coming into the third round of Wimbledon.

Isner will rely on his big serve to win points against Sinner. The serve could play havoc with Sinner on grass, a surface he hasn’t been great on.

Jannik Sinner vs John Isner Betting Tips

Isner’s serve is bound to play a big part on Friday. He scored 36 aces against Murray. Yes, Murray has had hip injuries and Sinner is far younger, but the Italian should spend parts of Friday’s match chasing down Isner’s thunderous serves.

Sinner could struggle to break Isner’s serve. Although Sinner tallied 45 winners versus Ymer, he committed 48 errors, almost losing the match. All three previous meetings between Sinner and Isner were on hard surfaces. The transition to the softer, grass surface should favour Isner. His big serve should skip off of the grass with Sinner struggling to return it or break it.

Isner is the slight underdog at 6/4 to win the match. Although the bookies are backing Sinner to pick up the win, I’m banking on an upset from the American. Isner is a former Wimbledon semifinalist. He will fancy his chances of taking a big scalp against a player who is inexperienced on grass.

The American is at the best betting odds of 6/1 to win the match 3-2. There is a lot of value in those odds. My tennis betting tips prediction is to back Isner to win 3-2. If you prefer to play it a big safer, you may back the match to go to five sets at a price of 5/2. Regardless of which bet you choice, this should be a thriller in the third round of Wimbledon.
