Chelsea are on a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions as they head into matchday 3 of the Champions League. The Blues welcome France’s Rennes to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. The French side are competing in their first-ever Champions League campaign and will visit Stamford Bridge for the first time in European competition.

Rennes head into matchday 3 on the back of a 2-1 win at home to Brest in Ligue 1. The Black and Red are third in Ligue 1. Julien Stephan’s team have slipped up on the domestic front since the start of the Champions League. They now sit four points behind league leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

Frank Lampard’s team are coming off of a 3-0 away win at Burnley. It was their second straight win in all competitions after defeating Krasnodar on matchday 2 in the Champions League, 4-0. Chelsea are top of Champions League Gorup E thanks to goal difference. They are level on four points with Sevilla, but have scored three more goals than the reigning Europa League winners.

Draws have been a problem for Lampard and his players this season. Can Chelsea continue their winning run or will Rennes claim a famous win on Wednesday night?

Chelsea vs Rennes Betting Odds

Chelsea’s league win at the weekend pushed them up to sixth place and just four points off of league leaders Liverpool. Confidence will be high going into Wednesday night’s match in London. Chelsea have played 11 games in all competitions scoring 27 times and allowing 10 goals. They average 2.45 goals per match and allow just 0.91.

Lampard has improved his defence in recent weeks. Chelsea have kept four straight clean sheets in all competitions. They have six shut outs in all competitions. Five of the team’s six clean sheets have been registered by summer signing Edouard Mendy. The goalkeeper joined Chelsea from Rennes in August and has been excellent in goal. His performance against Manchester United in the league prevented the Blues from losing the game.

Rennes have played 11 times in all competitions. The Red and Black have scored 19 goals while allowing 13. Mendy’s absence from the squad has seen them struggle to keep clean sheets. Just one clean sheet has been kept by Rennes to this point. They are unlikely to keep Chelsea out of goal on Wednesday night.

The French club allow 1.18 goals per match while scoring 1.73 goals. Just once this season have Rennes failed to score in a game. That came on matchday 2 of the Champions League in a 1-0 loss to Sevilla.

Chelsea vs Rennes Team News

Lampard has one injury worry heading into matchday 3 of the Champions League. Forward Christian Pulisic has picked up another fitness issue. This time, he has thigh strain. Lampard is unlikely to risk the American in midweek. With the attacking options Lampard has, Pulisic could be shut down until late November following the upcoming international break.

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalga and midfielder Billy Gilmour are both ruled out of the game through injury. Neither will have started even if fit.

Stephan has more injury issues to worry about at Rennes than Lampard does at Chelsea. He is likely to be without five players for the game on Wednesday night. Flavien Tait is out of the squad currently due to an illness. There has been no word in the English press over whether it is COVID-19 related.

Rennes signed Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani on loan on October 3. The centre-back is yet to play for the French club and will remain out with a thigh issue. Rugani was signed to provide European experience to the French club. Teen sensation Eduardo Camavinga is ruled out until later this month with a contusion. Faitout Maouassa and Mbaye Niang are also ruled out. Stehpan’s losses are quite significant for the trip to London.

Chelsea vs Rennes Prediction

Chelsea to win to nil - BET NOW

Chelsea have kept four straight clean sheets. Two of those games were wins to nil. With the injuries to key players Rennes have, they are likely to struggle in the final third versus their former goalkeeper Mendy. Mendy has made Chelsea’s defence far better than they ever were with Kepa. Chelsea have kept six total clean sheets in all competitions with Mendy being the backbone of five.

Timo Werner to score anytime - BET NOW

Wenger started the season slowly, but has now got things going at Stamford Bridge. He has scored five goals in 10 games in all competitions. Three of those five goals have come in the Premier League with one in the Champions League. Werner scored and set up a goal against Krasnodar on Champions League matchday 2. He is in good form having scored in his last two games in all competitions.

Chelsea to win both halves - BET NOW

Chelsea have won both halves in each of their last two games in all competitions. In four of Chelsea’s 10 games this season in all competitions they won both halves. Rennes have injury issues that should prevent them from getting points at Stamford Bridge. The Champions League debutants did well enough on matchday 1 against Krasnodar, claiming a draw. However, against stronger Champions League teams, Rennes will struggle to score goals and get points.

Chelsea’s defence has improved greatly since Mendy came into the team full-time. Defence looks completely different with Mendy in net rather than Kepa. Fixtures are coming fast and furious, but Chelsea – along with all other Champions League teams – have a break, somewhat, coming up. The Blues will enter the international break next week after playing a very winnable game versus Sheffield United.

Rennes could have one eye on next weekend’s match versus Paris Saint-Germain. The Red and Black are third in the league and could get back in the Ligue 1 title race. Although they could take points off of Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend, Chelsea will claim a win on Wednesday night keeping their unbeaten run in the Champions League going.
