Tyson Fury was incredible at the weekend in Vegas and I’m sending him and the family huge love. He did everyone proud, but most of all himself.
Being part of one of the great boxing trilogies against Deontay Wilder puts him in the Ali, Frazier, Norton, Foreman, Lewis, Tyson and Holyfield mould - up with all the modern-day greats of the beautiful science. And for sheer excitement after that rollercoaster Saturday I reckon he tops the lot!
Deontay Wilder played his part for sure, but I reckon he’ll be annoyed with himself not taking the better man’s hand after the fight. Poor show, but hopefully he’ll make contact down the line. He gave everything, but was beaten fair and square by an inspired, relentless and brave Tyson Fury. Get in!
Talking of being beaten fair and square - who beats this 5-a-side team?
Like Tyson Fury, I’ve risen to a tough task set by those lovely people at Easyodds.
They said: “Vinnie, give us your ultimate 5-a-side team.” No f*cking around, they said. “Who’s the team which beats any other? The Crazy Gang included!”
Well, I’m not sure we’d get near this lot. What d’you reckon? This team is the absolute b*llocks. Unbeatable and the best 5-a-side team ever.
In goal, I’ve got Peter Schmeichel. A colossus of a goalkeeper and one of the main reasons why Man United famously won the treble in 1999. Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might have got the goals to seal the deal in the Champions League in Barcelona, but Schmeichel laid the foundations.
He’d be everywhere and would work brilliantly with the legendary Paolo Maldini in front of him, yes Paolo f*cking Maldini.
Another immense player, he could play anywhere across the back and was capped 126 times for Italy - AC Milan even retired the number 3 shirt when he hung up his boots. That makes him immortal in my book.
In front of Maldini I’m going George Best and Johan Cruyff.
Yes, that’s right - Best and Cruyff together in my fantasy 5-a-side. Who gets the ball of them? The dribbling, the tricks, the desire to score goals. This pair of legends had the lot and the football world is the poorer for neither sadly being around now.
Pele is still around, of course, and he’d be on the bench, probably with the little Argentinian ready to come on. But I’m sorry Lionel, I’m going Cristiano Ronaldo up top for Vinnie’s top five. I’d have to kick out Best or Cruyff to squeeze him in - and I can’t do that. But Cristiano up top gives me pace, power and a venomous shot.
So Peter Schmeichel, Paolo Maldini, George Best, Johan Cruyff and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Yep, that’ll do - and some!
I hope you followed us in with the golf this week.
Rafa Cabrera Bello won the Spanish Open in Madrid and Matthew Wolff finished second in Vegas - both of them tipped up by yours truly. Get in!
But there’s no resting on our laurels, we’re straight back in with this week’s PGA and European Tour events.
Stateside it’s the CJ Cup with the boys remaining in Vegas after the Shriners. They’re playing at The Summit Club, just six miles south of TPC Summerlin, so providing they’ve not indulged too much at the big fight or on The Strip all should be good. No huge travelling this week.
Anyway, I’m going with Collin Morikawa, who’s a member at The Summit Club, Brooks Koepka and Cameron Smith, while in the Andalucia Valderrama Masters - the Europeans are also staying put, in Spain again - I’m with Jon Rahm, Adri Arnaus and Jamie Donaldson. A Spanish or Welsh win, I reckon
Talking of winners, well done to the boys at Rogues Gallery Racing Club after Rogue Bear won at Nottingham last week. Love it.
Finally, check out my predictions below as the Premier League returns.
You’ll see I’m going Newcastle to beat Spurs on Sunday. The feelgood factor is back at St James’ Park a few billion-fold and I’d imagine the atmosphere there will be fantastic - and can see the Geordies home.
Their supporters will be playing fantasy football hereon in - at least until the January transfer window. Who will they get? Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe, Neymar - surely anything is possible, isn't it?!
Have a great week boys and girls.
