The nights are drawing in and one of the annual events we all look forward to is on the horizon, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2019.

Sunday 15 December sees the great and good descend on Aberdeen, with the finale, of course, seeing the big award handed out for the 65th time.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year Betting Odds

Cricketer Ben Stokes is the current favourite at 8/15 and looks untouchable in some quarters, having guided England to glory in the Cricket World Cup in July and produced the innings of a generation with his unbeaten 135 to win the third Ashes Test at Headingley the following month.

Stokes would be the first cricketer since Andrew Flintoff in 2005 to win the award but things could change between now and then. SPOTY can sometimes be affected by the date of the ceremony in the calendar, with success in the autumn often seen as a good thing.

Soon to be 2019 F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has been second three times, while taking the top award in 2014, but is as high as 40/1. This year's autumn sensation could, however, be England rugby union captain Owen Farrell with the Red Rose through to the Rugby World Cup final.

Jonny Wilkinson and Martin Johnson were first and second when they lifted the Webb Ellis Cup in 2003 and Farrell is around 8/1, a price that will plummet if his team beat South Africa on Saturday.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year Outsider Tips

Dina Asher-Smith to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year @ 5/1 - BET NOW

Farrell's team-mate Jonny May is 25/1 and might be worth a look but athletics has always been popular for SPOTY viewers due to its place on terrestrial TV.

With such a firm favourite value can be hard to find but sprinter Dina Asher-Smith is sure to be on many people's minds. The Londoner finished second in the 100m before taking gold in the 200m at the World Championships in Doha earlier this month.

Both Asher-Smith and heptathlete Katrina Johnson-Thompson (25/1), who won heptathlon gold, have endearing personalities that fans like but may have to wait until after next year's Olympics for their real chance.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year Prediction

Raheem Sterling to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year @ 40/1 - BET NOW

Ben Stokes looks unbeatable at the moment. The 28-year-old's actions over the summer united the country and he is hard to look past.

Therefore, a man to be on could instead be Raheem Sterling at a huge price, suggesting an each-way bet may be the one to look for.

The Manchester City and England man has matured immeasurably over the 18 months and already has 17 goals from 18 appearances for club and country this season.

Sterling's stock is high with the public so back Stokes for the win but the winger may bring joy for the each-way backer.
