It is two of the most successful cup teams in England who clash at Wembley on Sunday night in the final of this year's EFL Cup. In fact, Liverpool are the most successful team in the history of this tournament, with nine titles won in 13 finals. No other club has more than 10 finals (Manchester United).

Only Manchester City with eight is close to the number of titles. Chelsea are on nine finals and five titles. Five of those finals have been played by Chelsea since 2005 and if we are to lean on history, it will be a final shy on goals and a long game on Sunday night.

The last four finals Chelsea played in this tournament had a maximum of two goals, and three of them were only decided after extra time or more. It is of course interesting to note that the most recent of these took place against Liverpool. In 2022, they faced each other in both the EFL and FA Cup finals.

Both matches finished 0-0 and Liverpool won both after penalty shoot-outs. It is also the third time that the two clubs meet in the final of this competition and both needed extra time to find a decision with one win each. It has been less than a month since they last faced each other in a league match at Anfield.

Liverpool thrashed Chelsea 4-1. However, the Blues created enough chances for the match to have ended a little closer than the figures indicate, which does not change the fact that Liverpool were superb on the night.

Chelsea have dispatched Premier League rivals Brighton and Newcastle, while Liverpool have knocked out Bournemouth, West Ham and Fulham from the Premier League. Liverpool head into the final without defeat in their five cup-games, while Chelsea lost the first semi-final against Middlesbrough.

Both clubs have been hit with injuries. For Chelsea, it is hardly conceivable that players like Fofana and Reece James will be in action. Thiago Silva is also considered highly doubtful at the time of writing and in total, Chelsea could have had nine men sitting on the injury bench.

If Thiago drops out, Chelsea will have to field a new centre-back pairing compared to the latest game against Liverpool, but they can field the same 11 in the starting formation as most recently against Manchester City.

Liverpool seem hit even harder in terms of injuries to profiles, as goalkeeper Alisson and in-form striker Diogo Jota are both gone. In their recent game against Brentford they also lost Curtis Jones, Trent Alexander-Arnold are likely to sit out, while Darwin Núñez and Dominik Szoboszlai are reported doubtful.

Should everyone miss out, it is five men from Liverpool's starting line-up in the win over Chelsea who are missing at Wembley. You'd think it makes for a more even game than we saw at Anfield in January, even if Mo Salah could be back from injury and the AFCON finals.

Chelsea and Liverpool had to settle for a draw in their most recent final against each other, which finished with a 0-0 scoreline. The best betting odds on a draw at full-time with the bookies are at 13/5.

Chelsea vs Liverpool Betting Tips

Looking at the market for a goalscorer, it seems a good idea to side with Noni Madueke, who is performing well for The Blues. He found the back of the net twice in his most recent EFL Cup outings. He'll be out to add more goals against Liverpool. The visitors will be looking to Cody Gakpo to find the net once again, after managing four EFL Cup goals for Liverpool in recent matches.

Chelsea go into their next EFL Cup match, scoring a humble average of 1.5 per game in their last ten matches. They scored a mundane 15 times, while conceding six. That amounts to an average of 0.6 per game, where they kept their opponents from scoring five times.

Liverpool show off whopping stats from their previous ten matches. They average 1.7 goals per game, scoring 17 times, while conceding eight. That makes an average of 0.8 per game, as they pulled off a clean sheet in four of the matches.

Over 2.5 goals came out in eight of the last 10 matches Liverpool played across all tournaments. They managed to score an average of three goals themselves during this run.

Tips

BTTS: Yes

We trust neither defence to be able to keep their opponent at bay, when Chelsea welcome Liverpool this coming Sunday. Goals should be flowing at both ends of the pitch.
